Logically The Branches That Are The Most Physically Demanding Have Lower Enlistment Age Limits

Benefits of Joining the Military! Why People Join? Air Force Edition

Special Operations branches have stricter age limits for the same reason. Still, if a 38-year-old wants to give back to his country through military service, its now well within his reach to do so. In some cases, you can be well into your 40s and still serve- if you have what the military needs, that is. Age waivers are occasionally offered if you have critical skills or experience thats in short supply, but the commanding officer or community manager will have to approve it. Medical and legal professionals, plus religious officials, are the most likely to get approval.

Take Advantage Of All Benefits Prior To Separating

Before I left active duty, I made sure to take advantage of everything I could. As I mentioned, I tested out of many college classes and I used Tuition Assistance program to earn both my associates and bachelors degrees.

I also took advantage of the military health care system to have surgery on both of my knees I had a Grade 3 tear in each meniscus, a byproduct of my military service. Those knee surgeries saved me thousands of dollars in medical costs. Just as important, I was able to get those issues documented in my military medical records.

Make sure you do a thorough review of any benefits available to you and take advantage of those benefits if possible. You can visit your personnel or Human Resources office for an overview of the benefits that will be available to you. This will be helpful for you and your family as you transition.

Yoko Holdren wants to work.

She tried to find jobs for more than a decade but seemingly hit a roadblock at every turn. First it was the frequent moves with her husband, Master Sgt. Donovan Holdren, and the cost of child care for their three kids.

Then it was German employment and citizenship rules at Ramstein Air Base, where the family is stationed. Her green card neared expiration. And, just as she looked to get a job when her youngest son started school, the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Holdren turned to the Air Force and enlisted two weeks before her 40th birthday.

I thought, If I join the Air Force, they can train me from zero, she told Air Force Times. Whatever job is available, I will take it.

Threats to the free world must be met with mature individuals who know what is to be lost, say the authors of this commentary.

Now an airman first class in security forces technical school, Holdren is one of hundreds of people who have joined the Air Force in their late 30s since the service raised its age limit for new recruits nearly a decade ago. The career change has offered new challenges and second chances while offering the service another way to grow and diversify the force.

In 2014, the service increased the age cutoff from 27 to 39 for those without prior military service to enlist on active duty. The Air Force Reserve changed its age limit from 34 to 39 as well.

What About An Involuntary Military Separation

Unfortunately, you cant always predict when you will have to leave military service. I have known several people who were unexpectedly separated from the military for a variety of reasons, including medical, force shaping, and even misconduct.

The following link has an article and podcast with an in-depth guide covering many of the struggles facing servicemembers who are involuntarily separated from the military. It is a highly recommended resource for those who need additional information about what to expect and how to cope with this transition.

Which Offenses Require A Waiver

Offenses that need to and can be waved will depend on the military branch you are going to apply to. However, as a general rule, the following offenses need to be waived:

  • Minor traffic offenses. If youve had six or more minor traffic offenses fined at least $100 per offense, a waiver will be required.
  • Minor non-traffic offenses. If you have had three convictions for minor non-traffic offenses, you will again need a waiver.
  • Juvenile offenses. Juvenile offenses are those that have been committed under the age of 18. Again, keep in mind that you will need to reveal all the offenses committed as a juvenile, including offenses that have been expunged, dismissed, sealed, or pardoned.
  • Misdemeanor crimes. If youve had 2-4 civil convictions or other dispositions qualified as misdemeanors in the Armed Forces, a waiver will be required. A waiver will not be issued if you have four or more civil convictions.
  • DWI/DUI. If convicted for DWI/DUI two or more times, you will need a waiver. A waiting time of 12 months must pass from the date of the conviction for you to receive a waiver.
  • Felony offenses. The US Armed Forces have their own definitions of what constitutes a felony, though they mostly correspond with state definitions. Felonies are the most problematic among recruitment offenses.

Joining The Army At An Older Age

There are two ways for joining the military at 30.

You may enlist in a qualifying branch A) with or without a degree as an enlisted soldier or B) as an officer.

Recruits that already have a bachelors degree yet still prefer to join as enlisted automatically start with the ranking of E-4.

The starting salary for most E-4 military jobs is approximately $2,200 per month.

However, you can earn a higher salary by considering joining the military at 30 as an officer.

The opportunity is only available to college graduates.

Additionally, youll need to make it through boot camp just like every other enlisted recruit.

Joining the military at 30 as an officer provides one significant advantage pay.

An O-1 officer starts at a base salary of $3,190 per month compared to $2,200 for an E-4 recruit.

Can I Join The Military At 38 Years Old

Joining the U.S. military later in life may not be the usual route that most service members take, but it still holds opportunities and provides benefits for those who qualify. Whether it’s a sense of patriotism, a desire to change careers or the benefit of healthcare coverage for service members and their families, individuals in their thirties join the military for various reasons. If youre 38 years old, all branches of the military except the Air Force will be out of your reach if you want to sign up for active duty. But youll also find a place in the Navy and Coast Guard reserves if you want to join at age 38.

Joining the military at 35 years of age is possible in the Army. But if you’re as old as 38, you can also join the Air Force active duty, reserve and guard. You can also join the Navy and Coast Guard reserves.

What Military Branch Accepts Felons

And speaking of branches, what military branch accepts felons exactly? Well, you have chances of getting enlisted into any of the US military branches, but some accept felons more readily than others.

All military branches consider felony as a disqualification, but they do make some exceptions. In recent years, it appears that the US Army has issued more waivers when we talk about percentages. Bad conduct and drug waivers in the US Army accounted for 19% of waivers issued in 2016, 25% in 2017, and over 30% in the first half of 2018.

In contrast, the and Air Force have issued significantly less bad conduct and drug waivers, generally hovering from 2% to 13% of the total number of waivers. The Navy has slightly increased its waivers for bad conduct in recent years, bringing their share up to 13% of the total waiver number.

In addition, overall recruitment bonuses in the US Army grew by $115 million in the first half of 2018. The Navy also tripled their enlistment bonuses up to $100. As for other branches, theyve cut down on their enlistment bonuses Marines from $8.2 to $8 million and Air Force from $19 to $14 million instead of focusing on encouraging servicemen to stay in service.

This means that the US Army and Navy have been encouraging new people to enlist in the past years.

So in the near future, you may have more success with the US Army and the Navy than with other military branches.

Military Age Restrictions: How Old Is Too Old To Serve

In 2012, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure.

Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July.

At age 66, Broun still serves as a doctor in the Navy Reserve. In an interview with Army Times, he called the enlistment age cap an arbitrary policy.

There are people who want to serve and are physically fit, he said. There are some 20-year-olds who cannot run a mile.

Since Brouns attempt in 2012, the military policy on age restrictions has changed. The Air Force, for example, raised its maximum age. See the age requirements for Active Duty enlistees of each branch below:

    • Army: 17-35 years old
    • Navy: 17-34 years old
    • Air Force: 17-39 years old
    • Coast Guard: 17-27 years old

In general, the Defense Department restricts enlistment to those 35 and younger. Prior enlisted service members can subtract their previous years of service from their age in order to extend eligibility. For example, the current age cutoff in the Air Force is 39. This means that a 31-year-old veteran with four years of prior service experience would still be eligible to reenlist.

Rep. Susan Davis of the Armed Services Committee personnel panel has said the risks outnumbered gains when it came to enlisting older personnel. She said they are not only more likely to become injured, but also take more time to recover than their younger counterparts.

Why Does The Military Impose Age Enlistment Restrictions

You might think that there should be no age limit on wanting to serve your country. However, the age enlistment limit ensures that every recruit has the time to satisfy minimal education requirements and are adequately fit.

Although we would not like to admit it, the human body tends to become less physically fit as it ages. Over a certain age threshold, it is difficult for a person to be in good physical condition to meet the necessary standard of fighting for a country.

    Military To Civilian Resume

Most military veterans have a strong skill set. However, its important to convey your skills in a way that civilian employers will understand. That means writing your resume in a way that anyone can read it. You also need to convey your value to a potential employer.

Start by scrubbing acronyms and replacing them with civilian terms. Instead of Squad Leader or Platoon Leader, try using Team Leader or Middle Manager.

For example, my first Air Force Specialty Code was 2A676, Electrical-Environmental Systems Specialist.

That means absolutely nothing to anyone outside of the Air Force .

Instead, I should list my job as an Aircraft Mechanic and list some skills that come with the territory, such as mechanical skills, troubleshooting, shift leader, special duties held, etc.

More importantly, since I was trying to break into a new career field, I should write my resume as a Functional Resume, or Skills-Based Resume, not as a Chronological Resume, which simply lists my job and accomplishments in reverse chronological order. This guide has more on creating an excellent resume.

This article covers more detail on how to translate your military skills into terms civilians will better understand. This is an essential part of finding a job in the civilian sector.

    Apply For Va Disability Benefits

I encourage all military veterans to apply for VA service-connected disability rating if they have any injury or illness that occurred or was made worse during their time on active duty.

Again, applying for benefits is all upside, and no downside. Take a copy of your military medical records to a Veterans Service Organization and sit down with them to review your files. They will help you apply for benefits based on your records.

Even having a 0% rating indicates there is a medical condition that occurred during military service. There may not be an immediate impact on your health today. But having it documented proves the connection to your service and will make it easier to get a disability rating should your condition worsen as you age.

A 10% rating or higher is enough to receive a monthly disability compensation payment for the rest of your life. You can also earn other benefits, such as access to VA medical care, having the funding fee waived on a VA Loan, and more.

Higher ratings may bring different benefits, including higher monthly compensation payments, access to medical care, concurrent receipt with military retirement pay, possible education benefits through the Vocational Rehabilitation Program, and much more.
