What Services Are Available For Asthma In The Military

Because asthma and related respiratory problems can worsen over time, its important that military servicemembers obtain a thorough evaluation of their health in order to help get treatment to control symptoms, even if youre already in the military.

As with signs of any medical condition during military service, asthma symptoms should also be taken seriously. Every effort should be made to determine whether an individual can continue with military service in order to avoid unnecessary risk to their own life or to the lives of others who serve with them.

Medical research supports the involvement of people with asthma in the military with basic treatment for symptoms.

Research from 2015 in Federal Practitioner suggests that most service members with asthma can remain on active duty when management with inhaled therapies that allows them to meet standards and perform required duties.

Researchers involved in this 2015 study also suggest that an asthma diagnosis should be given along with the following tests to confirm the accuracy of the diagnosis:

  • how strongly the airways react to asthma triggers
  • how the heart behaves during asthma diagnosis tests

You may have a greater chance of receiving a waiver if:

  • you are currently being treated for asthma
  • your symptoms appear to be well controlled
  • your symptoms are relatively mild

Poorly controlled symptoms are likely to lead to a waiver disapproval and disqualification from joining the military.

Getting Into Another Branch

Sometimes people who have signed up for the DEP of one branch of the military decide they want to be in a different branch instead. Because a person is only allowed to be in one branch of the service at a time, a DEP member who wants to change branches must be discharged before he or she can sign another contract. Because many recruiters leave people in the DEP for the entire year allowed, this presents a problem when people are in a hurry to join another branch. One avenue to speed up the process of getting out is to submit a letter asking for release. Telling the recruiter that you are interested in joining a different branch of the military may cause the recruiter to delay your release as long as possible, knowing that you cant join another branch until you are released

If after 2-3 weeks of asking for discharge in writing there is no satisfactory reply, a person can contact their local congressional office and ask that an inquiry be done into status of their separation request.

How Does Someone Get Out Of The Delayed Entry Program

One easy way to get out of the DEP is to do nothing. Simply not reporting on the day the person is scheduled to ship out sends the strongest signal to recruiters and military personnel that the person is no longer willing to become a member of the armed forces. If you are planning not to report on the ship date, it is not necessary to notify the military ahead of timeof that decision. People are separated for not reporting whether or not they have given prior notice. This is the most commonly chosen way of getting out of the DEP.

Some people feel more comfortable contacting recruiters and asking to be released from the DEP before their ship date comes. Many feel that they owe the recruiter the courtesy of notifying them that they have changed their mind so that the recruiter can spend his or her time elsewhere. Some people feel it is more official to send a formal letter asking to be discharged.

It is not necessary to write a letter or give an explanation for the change in mind.

For those who choose to write a letter, be aware that notifying the recruiter signals to them that it is time to step up their pressure. If you tell them you changed your mind, the recruiter and/or their commander are instructed to try to resell you on enlistment. Many people report seeing a less friendly side of recruiters after informing them they have changed their plans.

Enlistment Via Daca Program

Currently, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals may face a new reality in the current administration and could be subject to deportation versus having the ability to work or attend advanced educational opportunities. However, Congress could change direction and allow DACA groups the opportunity to serve in the military.

An enlisted member enters the Army as a Private. After completing basic training, the enlisted recruits advances to Private First Class. The next notable advancement is to a Noncommissioned Officer.

Joining The Military At An Older Age

My husband first joined the Military when he was 19 and got out when he was 21. We met when he was 25, got married, had a child and he re-joined at age 30. We made the decision for him to join the Army again together. We already had a child and we were about 10 years older than a lot of other Military couples.

Joining the Military at an older age can be an interesting experience. My husband is now 37 working with a lot of guys in their early or mid 20s. A lot of the wives are in their early or mid 20s. I sometimes feel like an outsider because I am no longer in that stage of my life. I have been out of my parents house for almost as long as I have lived on my own. We have been married over 10 years and two of our children are in elementary school. Many of the men my husbands age have been in the Military for almost twenty years.

I feel as though my husband and I have a different perspective on the Military life. This isnt something he is doing that he will be done with in his 30s. If he does his full 20 years he will be in his late 40s before he gets out of the Army.

Joining the Military at a later age can be a hard decision. It isnt as easy as when your younger but it can be done. Sometimes joining up in your late 20s or 30s is just the career change someone is looking for. Although you are not starting out as young, you can have a full career with the Military.

Have You Always Been Able To Get A Waiver For Asthma

Join the Military â Just Cause 2 Mods

Getting a waiver is a relatively recent development.

Before 2004, a history of asthma at any age could disqualify someone from military service. After 2004, the cutoff for asthma symptoms after 13 was made when a study of 587 recruits found that a history of mild asthma was not associated with excessive medical care or early attrition from military service.

The military has also acknowledged that the prevalence of asthma is increasing in the general public. By denying entry to a group of potential recruits, the military would be reducing the size of its recruitment pool.

In general, the waiver guidelines and requirements related to asthma are similar across all branches of the military.

Here are some specific rules that you may encounter across different branches of the U.S. military.
