Can You Join The Military At 16 Years Old

If I Enlist In Military Service With Parental Permission Am I Then Consisdered Emancipated Under State Law

Joining the Royal Marines at 16 Years Old (My Experience)

Maybe. The answer depends on the law of the State where you are living and the facts of your personal situation. Unless your State has a specific law on this issue, the answer will probably depend on whether your parents continue to provide you with financial support after you enlist.

Check with your local legal aid provider or military service representative if you have questions about this in your State.

Is A Career In The Armed Forces For Me

If you are looking for an army career with lots of challenges and surprises, the Army, Navy or RAF could be for you.

You will need to be disciplined, follow instructions, be a team player and stay calm under pressure.

You could be sent abroad for months at a time so you should be flexible and happy to travel.

Frontline jobs, such as in the Armys infantry, can put you in stressful and sometimes dangerous positions, where you might have to engage in combat or defend yourself, so you should do your research and think very hard about which job is right for you.

Youll also need to make sure you want to be in it for the long haul. You must sign up for at least four years’ service and give one year’s notice if you want to leave plus you can only give notice after three years of service.

Once you leave, you are added to the reserve list and can be called up to serve for up to 16 days per year. The length of time you remain on the list depends how long you have served for, and when you signed up.

What Is The Maximum Age To Enlist In The Military

One of the most frequently asked questions recruiters get asked is what are the maximum age limits to enlist in the military service. There is an age limit that disqualifies certain ages from joining the military. However, the age limit is higher that you may think. If you are over this age limit, you are not qualified for service. But, if you keep pushing and proving to the recruiters that your experience and physical fitness levels are acceptable, you could be eligible for an age waiver. The most frequently asked question is the following:

Are Younger Recruits At Higher Risk Of Developing Mental Health Conditions

The Defence Select Committee has recently urged the MoD to conduct or commission further research into recruits under 18 to determine the extent to which they are at higher risk of developing mental health conditions.

Last week, ForcesWatch said in a press release:

  • While limited research and data show mental health in military populations to be broadly the same as in the civilian population, the mental health of the youngest recruits is markedly worse than that of their civilian counterparts.
  • The only group of veterans to show higher rates of suicide than the general public were those under the age of 24, who have a risk three times higher than their civilian counterparts.
  • Early service leavers and young recruits with a lower educational status, in a lower rank and from regions with historic lower social economic status, suffer more from mental ill-health than others in the military population
  • The report stresses that military service can have a positive effect on mental health and can help those who were more vulnerable before they joined. However, it admits the military is unlikely to prevent mental health difficulties from developing but rather delays them until after service.

Who Are Reservists And What Do They Do

Reservists are part of team of highly skilled individuals, known as the Canadian Reserve Force. The Reserve Force has four sub-components but the Primary Reserve is the largest component. Reservists usually have a full-time job or attend school during the daytime and work on a part-time basis with the CAF to make a positive impact on their community, learn new skills and earn a little extra money.

Reservists play an important role in supporting Canadian operations both at home and abroad. In the past, part-time CAF members have kept Canadians safe and secure by:

  • helping with flood relief efforts in Quebec and Manitoba
  • fighting forest fires in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia
  • participating in recovery efforts following ice storms in eastern Canada
  • assisting with hurricane relief efforts in Newfoundland and Labrador

Reservists are also active in their communities and help with cultural events, parades, festivals and other public events in communities across Canada, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Our part-time members may also choose to serve overseas, when there are opportunities available.

Getting Ready To Train

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Raising The Age Of Military Enlistment

The following is the introduction for the book Only the Young Shall Die by Peter Polack and Jack McCain.

As counter-intuitive as it would appear, the average age of young men dying in combat has decreased substantially from the mid-twenties of earlier wars to the late teens. One estimate puts the average age of Union soldiers during the American Civil War at just under twenty-six years old. A report on enlisted men from North-West England in the Great War puts the average age of dead soldiers at twenty-seven years old but more nineteen year olds died than any other age group. By World War II the average age of the US fighting man was still twenty-six years.

In the Vietnam War the average age of soldiers killed in action had declined to 23 years and twenty percent of those killed were less than twenty years old. Whilst it is tempting to be distracted by the use of the term average which ultimately benefits future recruiters, the simple fact is that sixty-one percent of those killed were under the allowable age for drinking in the USA, twenty-one years old.

A snapshot of this evolving paradigm came on 10 July 2009 when five UK servicemen with an average age of twenty years were killed in the very dangerous Helmand province of Afghanistan. Three of the dead soldiers were only eighteen.

Perhaps the best conclusion was given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who pronounced this verdict from a familiar seat to some returning veterans, his wheelchair:

Common Questions About Army Officers

How long does it take to become an Officer?

It depends on which path you choose. If you choose to become an Officer through the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps or the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, youll become an Officer after completing four years of college. Through Officer Candidate School , youre commissioned as an Army second lieutenant after completing the 12-week course, but you still need to earn a four-year degree from an accredited university. If you join through direct commission, youre automatically an Officer when you enter the Army, but your commission may still be dependent upon completion of specific courses and certifications related to your branch.

What is the salary like for Army Officers? Are there additional benefits?

Army Officer salaries are generally comparable with mid-level to senior-level corporate executives. Officers are also eligible for other benefits such as Army housing and health care, which can have additional financial value.

Do I need a college degree to become an Army Officer?

Yes, the one basic requirement to become an Officer is that you must have a bachelors degreenot necessarily at the start of the process, but by the time youre commissioned as an Officer. If you dont have a degree yet, the Green to Gold program is a way for enlisted Soldiers to earn a commission as an Army Officer after completing a bachelors degree or a two-year graduate degree.

Maximum Age For Military Enlistment

Joining The Military When You’re Older – I’m 38 Trying To Go Active Duty

Across the United States Armed Forces, the maximum age for enlistment for someone who has never served in the military before depends on the branch. For the Army, the maximum age is 35. For the Navy, age waivers start at 34-years-old. For the Air Force, the maximum age allowed to join is 39-years-old. The Marines have the lowest maximum age for regular military service at 28-years-old. Special Operations branches also have different maximum ages due to the physical challenges put upon the candidates compared to regular military service. These maximum ages can be waived if the recruit has the education, skills, experience that the military needs to fill its ranks. The same holds true for the Special Operations communities, where waivers are available, but only on a case by case basis and typically approved or disapproved by the commanding officer of the selection program or the community manager/detailer.

Often the age waivers that do get approved are those in the professional jobs fields .

The maximum age of non-prior service enlistment under Federal Law was 35-years-old. In 2006, the Army asked Congress to raise the age limit to 44-years-old. Congress did not approve this change, but raised the maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42.

Regardless of Federal Law, the military services are allowed to impose more strict standards, and many of them have. The maximum age for non-prior service enlistments for each service is:

But Is 16 Too Young To Join The Army

A nationwide survey found 72% of people who expressed a view believed young people should not be able to join the Army until they are 18.

The survey, commissioned by Child Soldiers International, ForcesWatch, Medact and Saville Roberts, also presented that around 10% of those people also said they believe the minimum age should actually be 21.

According to Child Soldiers International, one in three soldiers who join up at 16 or 17 leaves the Army after a few months, resulting in no job and little education

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “Joining the Armed Forces gives young people the opportunity for a great career and we are proud of the opportunities we can offer to recruits.

“We take our duty of care for all personnel extremely seriously and ensure under-18s are not deployed on operations that would expose them to hostilities.

Even though the minimum age of enlistment is 16, no one under 18 can enlist without parental consent, nor can they be deployed on operations outside of the UK, except where the operation does not involve personnel becoming engaged in or exposed to, hostilities.

Under 18s were used in 1982 in the Falklands War, in the Gulf War between 1990-91 and they were deployed to NATO peacekeeping operations in former Yugoslavia.

The UK committed to stopping routinely deploying individuals under the age of 18 by signing the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict in 2000.
