What Happens To High School Dropouts: Real World Consequences

Even though some people find success despite never graduating from high school, in general, dropping out of high school is a bad idea financially, healthily, and psychologically. Fortunately, according to statistics from the National Center for Educational Statistics , drop out numbers have decreased since 2004 until 2016 from 10.9% to 6.1% .

Around the US, dropping out of high school creates a lifetime of problems including:

  • Reduced productivity
  • Billions of lost wages and tax revenue

One of the significant consequences dropouts will deal with is having difficulty finding a job that pays a living wage. This results in people who become a financial drain on society rather than becoming an asset. The consequences can extend into future generations as children of dropouts live in poverty and have related traumas in their young lives, feeding a cycle that is difficult to break.

National University Seeks Motivated Students

Advisors at NU look for military students who are motivated, focused, and want to do better in life. These students may not have been successful in the classroom before entering the military. But military service can change all that.

A lot of students go to different schools and dont do well because they dont know how to balance military commitments, Spittler says. But she explains when theyve been in the military for a while, theyve learned discipline and accountability, and have developed the motivation to move up in rank. So all of this makes a difference when they decide to return to the classroom. In the application process, their high school grade point average is not as important as their current level of motivation, according to Spittler.

While a student with a low high school GPA may be embarrassed when they first approach an advisor, Spittler says she and her colleagues are understanding and will ask: What is different now?

In an interview process, the advisor gathers information and asks questions that help the student determine their reason for seeking more education, and to help understand if they are ready.

She finds that, most often, prospective military students are usually ready and prepared for the challenge of college after serving in the military for a year or two. Additionally, the educational benefits theyve earned help ease the decision.

With all that lined up, Spittler adds, So why shouldnt they go to school?

Students Who Persist Earn Degrees

Spittler has been with National University for 16 years and was an advisor to students in the early days of the military online department She recalls another memorable military and college success story.

Despite being deployed four times and going through a divorce, this student kept coming back to take courses through NU. It took him 12 years of persistence to finish his associate degree, but finish he did. His example demonstrates the difficult balancing act between military service, family, and education.

They go through so much, theyre out there protecting us, and they have to balance between the military and families theyre all about their families, Spittler says. So having to deal with that and wanting to get their education, and seeing them succeed, that to me is why Im still doing what Im doing.

An Army Recruiter Talks About Joining The Armed Forces

Q: Whats the first conversation when a young person walks through your door?

Black: I ask, How can we help you? And, I listen to what they say. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to join the Army. Then, I explain what the Army has to offer: the different jobs that we have and the difference between active duty and the reserve. And, we go from there.

Q: What kinds of career opportunities are there?

Black: There are many career opportunities in the Army. Each base is a city of its own, run by the soldiers. So, any job that interests you, ranging from maintenance to medical, you can pursue in the Army. As far as fitting a person to a particular job, thats based on availability and the applicants results on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery . An applicant will be presented with the available jobs that he or she qualifies for.

Q: Is it the same for both active duty and the reserve? Whats the difference?

Black: It works the same for both. Active duty is someone who is in the Army 24/7. Its his or her job, being in the Army. Both active duty and reserve soldiers go to basic training. Basic training is nine weeks, but I tell people ten weeks because you first go to a reception station at the training post for 3-5 days.

Q: What then?
Q: How long is that training period?

Black: It depends on the job you select: maybe four weeks, six weeks or even 52 weeks.

Q: What job would take a year?

Black: A job like linguist may take a year.

Q: So what is ROTC?

Basic Training To Join The Army

Joining the National Guard while in High School

Basic Training, or known as boot camp, is an intense program that introduces recruits to the military services life and trains a person into a soldier.

You may only have a short time for your new career path preparation depending on when you leave for the boot camp. That means you should organize everything in order to get ready before the Army boot camp. Think of heading out for the boot camp as any other move. Youll need to put into storage such items as mail forwarding, your car, and packing items. If you even have a pet, youll want to find someone to take care of it while youre gone or find another home.

When you join the Army, you are provided a list of clothing and toiletries to bring, so make sure you find time to prep those items before leaving. Youll also want to make sure you have any needed documents, such as your Social Security card, birth certificates, and bank information. These may take some time to get if you dont already have them, so dont leave this until the last minute, if possible.

Basic Training Locations

After enlistment, you will do basic training at one of several locations around the country. Army basic training locations are:

  • Fort Benning, Ga.

  • Fort Sill, Okla.

  • Fort Jackson, S.C.

Can I Afford To Go To School While Im On Active Duty

Active-duty servicemembers are eligible for Military Tuition Assistance, the most common form of military financial aid assistance. The program pays up to $4,500 each fiscal year for tuition and other school expenses, aid that can serve as an important motivator for students.

If someone in the military has served long enough, they may become eligible for GI Bill benefits. However, these benefits have a few limitations for those on active-duty. Spittler explains one caveat: the housing allowance isnt available to those still serving.

With the GI Bill, theyre not going to get the housing allowance because theyre already getting that in the military, Spittler says.

The GI Bill is more likely to come into play during active reserve duty when members of the military can use the GI Bill for on-site classes. The GI Bill is also popular among veteran students. In addition, all or part of any unused GI Bill education benefits can be gifted to a spouse as long as the request is completed while the servicemember is an active member of the armed forces.

These financial perks are motivators for active-duty servicemembers to enroll in college, Spittler says. Another financial boost can come from increased rank and pay. For example, Spittler explains if someone is moving closer to a bachelors degree, they do get points toward moving up in the ranks and being promoted to the next rank.
