Getting Fit With Fitt
As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:
- Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
- Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
- A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.
Military Age Restrictions: How Old Is Too Old To Serve
In 2012, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure.
Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July.

Members of the U.S. military service maintain the U.S. national defense. Although some service members work in occupations specific to the military, such as fighter pilots or infantrymen, many work in occupations that also exist in the civilian workplace, such as nurses, doctors, and lawyers. Members serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, , or Coast Guard, or in the Reserve components of these branches, and in the Air National Guard and Army National Guard.
One Year Of Military Service At Any Time
If you served honorably in the U.S. armed forces for at least one year at any time, you may be eligible to apply for naturalization. While some general naturalization requirements apply under INA 328, other requirements may not apply or are reduced. To establish eligibility under INA 328, you must:

- Have served honorably at any time in the U.S. armed forces for a period or periods totaling at least 1 year

Guaranteed First Duty Assignment
The Army and the Navy are the only active duty services which can offer a guaranteed first duty assignment. However, since the invasion of Iraq, the Army rarely offers this incentive anymore. When authorized, under the Army Program, you can get a written guarantee in your enlistment contract for your first duty assignment following basic training and job training . This option is only available for certain, hard-to-fill Army Jobs. Additionally, the guarantee is only good for 12 months. After that, the Army can move you anywhere it wants.
The Navy program is a “sort of” guaranteed first duty station. Under the Navy program, you can be guaranteed a first assignment in a designated geographical area. In other words, while the Navy can’t guarantee that you would be assigned to a particular base, they can, for example, guarantee an assignment on the West Coast. However, under the Navy program, there is a catch — the program is not available to those who sign up with a guaranteed rating . It’s only available for those who enlist under the GENDET program. Under the GENDET enlistment program, applicants pick a “general field,” such as “aviation,” rather than a specific rating. Then, following basic training, they spend a year or so at a Navy Base, doing general duties as an “undesignated seaman” before they get to choose their rating and go to job-school.

To Earn Military Perks
With military service comes other perks outside military benefits. Each service branch has a Morale, Welfare and Recreation office dedicated to helping military families connect with these opportunities. Where Does Basic Training Take Place
For all full-time regular force candidates, basic training takes place at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.
All part-time candidates joining their local Primary Reserve unit will undergo similar basic training objectives. Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Types Of Military Discharge
As Military Benefits explains, an honorable discharge is the highest discharge a military member can receive. It demonstrates the service member’s faithful execution of duties and attests that the individual was an asset to the branch served. When you look for job, apply to college or training programs and even when you apply for a home or car loan, an honorable discharge, as evidenced on your DD 214, is a valuable asset.
Other types of military discharge include General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions, Other Than Honorable , Bad Conduct Discharge and Dishonorable Discharge. In addition to a bar from future military service and loss of any benefits, there may be punitive measures as well.

Pay About This Section
Basic pay is based on rank and time in service. Pay bands are the same for all branches. Members of the Armed Forces may receive additional pay based on their job assignment or qualifications. For example, they receive additional pay for foreign, hazardous, submarine, or flight duty, or for being medical or dental officers. Retirement pay is generally available after 20 years of service.

Are There Physical Fitness Requirements To Join
Yes, there are physical fitness requirements to join the Army. The Armys Physical Fitness Test is used to assess the physical endurance of a recruit. APFT is a 3-part fitness event: 2 minutes of push-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and a timed 2-mile run. Recruits must pass the APFT to graduate boot camp.
The APFT physical fitness requirements vary by age and gender. Reference the table below to find your minimum fitness requirements.

Recruiter Promises Versus Contract Guarantees
No matter what your recruiter promised you, if it’s not in the enlistment contract, or in an annex to the contract, it’s not a promise. Also, it doesn’t much matter what is in the DEP enlistment contract if it isn’t in your active duty enlistment contract, it’s not a promise. If you were promised an enlistment bonus, for example, it needs to be in the final active duty contract, or chances are you’ll never see that bonus. Once you get out of basic training and job training and go to the personnel office at your first base, they’re not going to give one hoot about what anyone “promised” youthey’re only going to care about what is in the enlistment contract.
In fact, the bottom of the very first page of the enlistment contract contains the following clause:
The agreements in this section and attached annex are all the promises made to me by the Government. ANYTHING ELSE ANYONE HAS PROMISED ME IS NOT VALID AND WILL NOT BE HONORED.
That said, incentives and entitlements which are available to everyone won’t be, and don’t need to be in the contract. This is because military members are already entitled to it by law. For example, medical care, base pay, and the Montgomery G.I. Bill won’t be specified in the contract, because these benefits are available to everyone who enlists in the military.
You do, however, need to make sure all of your desired incentives are included in the final active duty contract .
Can I Join With Asthma What About Poor Vision Or Hearing
In some cases, yes. Asthma is only disqualifying if it occurred after an applicants 13th birthday. Hearing, vision, and asthma qualifications are typically determined by medical exams and are not service-specific. If a doctor denies an applicant, that applicant can still request an asthma, vision or hearing loss waiver.

Age does not entail getting better or worse treatment in the military. The maximum age to join the Army as an enlisted Soldier is 35, and you must enter active duty prior to your 36th birthday. For Officers, you must accept your commission by age 32. However, restrictions can be lifted based on the need for certain roles. Recruits can receive an age waiver, so long as they can retire with 20 years of military service by age 55. Talk to a recruiter to get a better understanding of the demand for certain roles.

Extra Training And Education While Reserve Status
There are other training options you can do as a former Army active duty member while in the National Guard to advance your career. There is an Army Special Forces program that allows for a National Guard member to attend the various schools in the Special Forces pipeline and actually become an Army Special Forces soldier earning the Green Beret. Once you are a member of the 19th and 20th Special Forces Groups you will continue to train and can deploy when needed as an augmentee into an active unit.
Active Reserve and National Guard enlistments are usually for a minimum of six years .
If you are commissioned as an officer through the ROTC or Service Academy college programs, you owe the military five years of active duty service with a two-year option of Reserve Duty or IRR.
