Making It Work Under Difficult Circumstances

Can You Go To College While in The Military? (United States Army)

Perseverance and dedication are key characteristics of successful students. Spittler says shes helped hundreds of students, and always loves to hear their stories. A few of them still stand out in her memory.

She recalls advising an online military student who was deployed overseas. He was interested in a masters program at National. She told him itd be a great program for him, but that he needed to take the classes in sequence, without breaks in between. She also told him his options in case he needed to drop a class.

Throughout the program, the student kept in touch with Spittler and, although she knew he was deployed, she didnt know where. Spittler says when a student is on active duty, You cant really discuss where theyre at because of security reasons. I really dont ask.

Wherever he was serving, the time difference was significant, and the student would stay up late in order to call Spittler during her office hours if he needed to speak to her. His ability to focus on difficult coursework while deployed really captured her attention and she praised him for his efforts.

Finally, he arrived at his capstone project, which is the last course in a National University program. Going into the last course, he had all As, but he was upset to receive a B+ in his final class.

She told him not to be so unhappy about the B+, but rather to be proud of what he had accomplished. It was no small thing to transition from one country to another and then to transition home.

Active Duty To Medical School

Hansell_M98 said: Hey everyone! I’ve just recently graduated from college and I’ve become really interested in joining the military and become an officer. However, my dream has always been to go to medical school and become a doctor . Is it possible to enter the military as an active duty officer and work your way to enter medical school? I noticed that several of the branches offer the HPSP program. Is it possible to apply for the program while being in active duty? If so, does being an officer help your chances of being accepted into the program? Any information will help. Thank you!

Hansell_M98 said: Thanks for the response! I’ve been hesitant in applying for medical school considering that my GPA isn’t as competitive as I would like to be. I’ve applied for post baccalaureate programs and Special Master’s programs earlier in the year, but, because of the coronavirus, my family has been running low on money and I can’t see myself being able to pay for these programs if I were accepted. That being said, I wanted to know if joining the military can help me become a more competitive applicant for medical school in the future, and if it’s possible to apply for those programs that they offer while on active duty?

Are There Any Downsides To Going To School On Installation

How Military School Motivates Teens to Succeed

Unfortunately, not all classes or programs are offered on military installations. In some cases, you would have to figure out another way to go to school. They also might have smaller class sizes that fill up faster which is something to keep in mind. You might not be in a traditional looking classroom if space is limited and that will depend on your duty station.

What If You Are A Military Spouse

Military spouses can also attend classes on a military installation.

That will make things a little easier for them as they support their service member and continue their education at the same time.

With easy access to CDCs on the installation, going to school there will make the whole process a bit easier for the spouse.

Enlist Support From Friends And Family

Eduction and life in general are easier to handle when your family and friends support your goals. Be sure to let them know how important your dream of an education is and do your best to support them in return.

Remember, each situation, degree plan, unit work load, and other factors are different, so you may need to exercise more flexibility and patience if you want to attend classes while on active duty. I feel very fortunate to have been able to complete my Bachelors Degree while on active duty because it gave me options when it came time to make the decision to reenlist or separate from the military. Ultimately, I chose to separate from the military because I was ready for a new challenge in life. But I am forever grateful for the opportunity I had to achieve my degree and make that decision.

If You Are Not In The Usar Or Arng

YouthTruth

To get into the SMP, students with no prior military service will attend Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training during the summer and will be assigned to a local National Guard or Reserve unit upon completion of training.

  • It is possible to join the ARNG and enroll in ROTC without going to Basic Training, but without Basic Training and AIT you are only eligible for a fraction of the tuition benefits available.
  • In most cases, completing BCT and AIT will take longer than the summer break and cause you to skip a semester, or half semester of classes. However, many students see this as a good bargain for the amount of financial aid it makes you eligible for.

Rotc As A Graduate Student

College while in the military

The Reserve Officer Training Corps prepares college students for careers as military officers. Dating back to 1916, when it was founded as part of the National Defense Act, today’s ROTC program combines academic education with military training. ROTC cadets earn a degree while completing additional military science training. After completing the program, graduates join the military as officers and take on leadership roles in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or other armed service branches.

Grad student ROTC recipients can use the program to pay for a master’s degree. ROTC programs provide full tuition and a book allowance for grad students, along with a monthly stipend. During grad school, ROTC cadets complete the same coursework requirements as other students, with additional military training requirements. After graduation, master’s students can join the military as officers, typically for a four-year service agreement. When recipients fulfill the service requirement they can transition to civilian jobs in the same field as their master’s degree.

This guide covers ROTC in grad school, including requirements and benefits. It also explains the difference between ROTC and officer candidate school and provides information about additional ROTC scholarships.

Montgomery Gi Bill Active Duty

The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty is another benefit that can help active-duty recruits pay for education and training programs that arent covered by the tuition assistance program. This is available for those who have served at least two years in any of the militarys four branches and contributed $100 a month for the first 12 months of active duty. Though most people save these benefits until they leave the military or transfer them to family members, you can use them while youre still on active duty, but the rate you receive varies.

According to Military.com, Montgomery GI Bill benefits can be worth up to $76,000 . These also expire 10 years after your last separation from active duty, so its wise to use them while youve got them.

Do These Benefits Expire

This depends on when you were discharged from active duty.

If your service ended before January 1, 2013, your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits will expire 15 years after your last separation date from active service. You must use all of your benefits by that time or youll lose whatevers left.

If your service ended on or after January 1, 2013, your benefits wont expire thanks to a new law called the Forever GI Bill – Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act. Some letters you receive from us may not yet reflect this change. Thank you for your patience as we work to update our systems.

Army Schools While Pregnant

You should be able to go. I believe pregnancy only disqualifies you from obviously physical schools/training like jump school and so on. A mostly academic school should allow you to attend on a pregnancy profile. You will not be required to take a PT test as you cant be required to take one when you are pregnant.good luck!

I wasnt able to attend a professional development course due to pregnancy, because an APFT was a graduation requirement. But you wont know unless you try.

I went to acquisition course from 19-26 weeks pregnant. I didnt have to take the APFT while there, nor do height/weight even though it was a requirement. It was waived for me since I had a pregnancy profile. Since I went TDY en route I told my branch manager I was pregnant, he said no issue so i think it depends on the type of school. Academic schools like that, you will probably be fine and easier to get it out of the way now than when you have a new baby. Id ask the school.

Education Is Freedom It Provides More Opportunities And Fewer Restrictions In The Workforce While Deciding Whether Or Not To Obtain A Degree May Not Be A Question For Some Service Members It Might Be An Outlier For Others

Completion prior to transition versus post-military is a consistent conundrum. A lot of active duty military ask us, Can you go to college while still in the military? Hopefully, this post will help you figure that out. Truth be told, there are pluses to both sides. But if you have the time while you are in the service, why not complete it and get a jump-start?

During the increased ops tempo, it may be difficult to focus on getting your education, but the DoD is committed to helping you get your degree. The military offers mobile testing sites, underway classrooms, the Internet, and many other ways for you to get your college degree while still in the military.

Most importantly, the DoD offers Tuition Assistance, allowing you to get the most out of the GI Bill. Thats what Air Force veteran Jesse Morse did, and he urges active duty service members to do the same. The more credits you can finish without using your GI Bill, the further the GI Bill benefits will extend. By taking a few online classes a year during my enlistment, I was able to use the GI Bill to pay for my entire undergraduate degree and one year of law school, which saved me a ton, says Morse, 28, who is now in his second year at Stetson University College of Law in Tampa Bay, Fla.

Military branches vary as to whether or not degrees help you climb the ranks , but the end-state goal of finishing your degree to improve your freedom later upon transition is equal across the board.
