Can You Enlist In The Army While In High School

Preparing For Your Career

Join the National Guard While in High School

Before enlisting in the military, take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assessment to see what sort of jobs youd be suited for. You might be surprised by your results. Taking the test early can help you select which electives to take. eAchieve Academy career-planning resources help our students find the right path for their academic and career goals.

Another option is for students to join a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. eAchieve students may be able to enroll through their local school district. Other groups include Naval Sea Cadets, Civic Air Patrol, and Young Marines. These three groups usually meet outside of school hours, making them more available to online student membership.

Officers are required to receive additional training. Taking honors & AP classes in high school will show recruiters youre suited for the path of an officer.

An Army Recruiter Talks About Joining The Armed Forces

Q: Whats the first conversation when a young person walks through your door?

Black: I ask, How can we help you? And, I listen to what they say. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to join the Army. Then, I explain what the Army has to offer: the different jobs that we have and the difference between active duty and the reserve. And, we go from there.

Q: What kinds of career opportunities are there?

Black: There are many career opportunities in the Army. Each base is a city of its own, run by the soldiers. So, any job that interests you, ranging from maintenance to medical, you can pursue in the Army. As far as fitting a person to a particular job, thats based on availability and the applicants results on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery . An applicant will be presented with the available jobs that he or she qualifies for.

Q: Is it the same for both active duty and the reserve? Whats the difference?

Black: It works the same for both. Active duty is someone who is in the Army 24/7. Its his or her job, being in the Army. Both active duty and reserve soldiers go to basic training. Basic training is nine weeks, but I tell people ten weeks because you first go to a reception station at the training post for 3-5 days.

Q: What then?
Q: How long is that training period?

Black: It depends on the job you select: maybe four weeks, six weeks or even 52 weeks.

Q: What job would take a year?

Black: A job like linguist may take a year.

Q: So what is ROTC?

Submit Your Application 4medical Exam

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

Online Degrees That Build Work Skills

Through a college education, active-duty students can enhance their existing job skills and even advance in rank as they apply what theyve learned to their positions. Spittler explains that a few of the more common National programs known to help military students advance in their careers include information technology management, cybersecurity, and leadership programs.

Some servicemembers choose programs that closely relate to what they are doing on active duty. For instance, many military medics or corpsmen pursue online or on-campus registered nursing programs. While you can serve as a Navy hospital corpsman without being a registered nurse, this educational experience can help you enter the nursing field after active duty.

Other students decide to pursue degrees that dont relate to their role in the military, opting for something that they might consider to be more marketable when they transition out of service, Spittler says. The variety of programs NU offers, more than 75 in all, gives them a lot of options to choose from and the one-month course format is very attractive to a servicemember who may need to pause for a month and then restart classes again.

S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the six active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

Can I Afford To Go To School While Im On Active Duty

Why you should NOT join the Military out of High School

Active-duty servicemembers are eligible for Military Tuition Assistance, the most common form of military financial aid assistance. The program pays up to $4,500 each fiscal year for tuition and other school expenses, aid that can serve as an important motivator for students.

If someone in the military has served long enough, they may become eligible for GI Bill benefits. However, these benefits have a few limitations for those on active-duty. Spittler explains one caveat: the housing allowance isnt available to those still serving.

With the GI Bill, theyre not going to get the housing allowance because theyre already getting that in the military, Spittler says.

The GI Bill is more likely to come into play during active reserve duty when members of the military can use the GI Bill for on-site classes. The GI Bill is also popular among veteran students. In addition, all or part of any unused GI Bill education benefits can be gifted to a spouse as long as the request is completed while the servicemember is an active member of the armed forces.

These financial perks are motivators for active-duty servicemembers to enroll in college, Spittler says. Another financial boost can come from increased rank and pay. For example, Spittler explains if someone is moving closer to a bachelors degree, they do get points toward moving up in the ranks and being promoted to the next rank.

Earning Potential With A Ged Versus A High School Diploma

Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average weekly income for people without a high school diploma is $493 or $25,636 per year per year.

But, even getting that job without a diploma is doubtful as the unemployment rate for Americans with less than a high school diploma is 8% – higher than for any other category of worker based on education level.

What about a GED versus a high school diploma? Statistics show that there’s a difference in earning potential between GED holders and high school graduates. In 2009, while those with GEDs earned more than high school dropouts, according to the Census Bureau, they still had lower earnings than students with a high school diploma.

They found that while high school graduates averaged about $ 4,700 a month, GED recipients earned about $3,100. Another interest fact they found was that even if someone with a GED went on to earn a college degree afterwards, they still earned about $1,400 less a month than degree holders who held a high school diploma before earning their degree.

    What Is The Rotp

The Regular Officer Training Plan gives young Canadians an opportunity to obtain both an officers commission in the Canadian Armed Forces and an undergraduate degree. The aim of the ROTP is to develop selected young men and women as officers in the CAF in a variety of career occupations. Successful ROTP candidates enroll in the CAF as Officer or Naval Cadets and attend the Royal Military College of Canada, or Royal Military College Saint-Jean.

Under the ROTP, the Department of National Defence pays for all costs of tuition, uniforms, books, instruments, and other essential fees. Officer and Navel Cadets are also paid a monthly salary , undergo military occupation training, and if required, second language training during the summer months, and receive full medical and dental care at no cost. Annual vacation with full pay is granted according to CAF regulations.

Officer and Navel Cadets are obliged to maintain satisfactory academic performance throughout the programme. Those who do not maintain a suitable level of academic performance may be permitted to repeat up to one year at their own expense and, if successful, be reinstated to full pay and allowances.

Upon successful completion of the ROTP, Officer and Navel Cadets are awarded a university degree, receive their commission, and become officers in the Canadian Armed Forces. Normally, graduates are obliged to serve for a minimum of five years in the CAF most pilots are required to serve ten years after graduation.

Requirements To Join The Army With A Ged

Can You Join the Military Without a High School Diploma?

The Army typically allows up to 10 percent of annual recruits from Tier 2. To join the Army with a GED, recruits must earn an ASVAB composite score of at least 50, which is 19 points more than with a high school diploma. ASVAB scores also determine your Military Occupation Specialties, or MOS, which is your specialized job while serving. The Army also may require Tier 2 recruits to take part in a 90 day delayed entry program before completing basic training.

    What Obstacles Do Active

Active duty servicemembers always face the chance of deployment. What if a student starts classes and then gets deployment orders, orders to go to training, or are temporarily assigned elsewhere? Spittler says NU has military-friendly policies in place to help their students navigate such issues.

Active-duty servicemembers also may have irregular schedules that make even online education difficult to sustain, such as 24-hour shifts, followed by an immediate call back to work.

Not all military work is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., which are typical military hours, she says. Advisors are available when these students need options and solutions. Sometimes military students need to drop a class, but again, the four-week monthly start format of National classes provides many opportunities for students to jump back in when they are ready. Other students may need to drop classes for a period of time when their annual Tuition Assistance runs out or when they cant afford the books required for a class.

Spittler says that advisors will tell students in this situation, Thats OK, well check in with you in a couple of months. You can let me know where youre at.

    National University Seeks Motivated Students

Advisors at NU look for military students who are motivated, focused, and want to do better in life. These students may not have been successful in the classroom before entering the military. But military service can change all that.

A lot of students go to different schools and dont do well because they dont know how to balance military commitments, Spittler says. But she explains when theyve been in the military for a while, theyve learned discipline and accountability, and have developed the motivation to move up in rank. So all of this makes a difference when they decide to return to the classroom. In the application process, their high school grade point average is not as important as their current level of motivation, according to Spittler.

While a student with a low high school GPA may be embarrassed when they first approach an advisor, Spittler says she and her colleagues are understanding and will ask: What is different now?

In an interview process, the advisor gathers information and asks questions that help the student determine their reason for seeking more education, and to help understand if they are ready.

She finds that, most often, prospective military students are usually ready and prepared for the challenge of college after serving in the military for a year or two. Additionally, the educational benefits theyve earned help ease the decision.

With all that lined up, Spittler adds, So why shouldnt they go to school?

Becoming An Officer In The Military After College

While its common knowledge that basic training sets recruits on the pathway toward becoming an enlisted service member, those with a desire for leadership opportunities and a bachelors degree can take another route into a military career as a commissioned officer.

The Reserve Officers Training Corps program for college students and Officer Candidate School or Officer Training School for graduates are great options for those who want to earn a four-year college degree before joining the military. Each service branch offers both ROTC and officer schools as entry points to an officer commission.

    Requirements For Officer School

Joining the National Guard while in High School

Being a U.S. citizen and having a four-year college degree or higher are the bare minimum requirements for officer school. Beyond that, the selection process is highly competitive across service branches. Candidates must meet physical standards, may have to pass a qualifying test, and demonstrate that they have leadership ability, integrity, dependability, academic discipline and adaptability.
