Physical Standards In Relation To The Demand For Soldiers

How are short guys treated in the Army?

U.S. Army Standards for Weight and Chest Girth, 1917.

variations in weight above the standard are disqualifying if sufficient to constitute such obesity as to interfere actually or potentially with normal physical activity, as may be evidenced by high blood pressure, a beginning nephritis, breaking down of the arches of the feet, or other defects incident to such condition. No applicant will be accepted for Cavalry service whose weight is in excess of 180 pounds .

In 1918, 2.6 percent of all candidates were rejected for military service for being underweight only 4,211 men were rejected for obesity and others classified as obese were still accepted for military service because “the variation was correctable with proper food and physical training” . Thus, obesity was functionally determined by the examining physician, and underweight was now defined by published height-weight tables.

Should I Join the Military?

If you like to smoke a joint once in a while, dont join. The military uses random, no-notice urinalysis, and if youre found positive, you may very well go to jail . The DOD urinalysis test can find THC in your urine for three weeks after youve smoked a joint.

Its often a good idea to bring a parent or relative with you for your first visit.

Us Army Height & Weight Requirements For Current Soldiers

Why do we include height and weight guidelines for currently serving troops in an article discussing enlistment standards? Because as mentioned above, it wont be long before the recruit is tested again for body composition after going on active duty. These issues are a career-long concern for all soldiers.

Previous iterations of AR-900 have included statements directed at currently serving soldiers that most today would consider to be derogatory. The 1986 version goes so far as to state, Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline, detracts from military appearance, may indicate a poor state of health, physical fitness, or stamina .

The above statement from the 1986 edition doesnt take into account medical issues or other factors that may inform the diagnosis of an individual person as overweight.

Language in the 2019 revision of AR-900 takes a far more nuanced approach, stating, Soldiers are subject to many demands and challenges that may impact individual readiness. The Army Body Composition Program provides commanders a systematic approach to enforce military standards across the unit while offering troops with the resources they need to return to an optimum level of individual readiness.

The U.S. Army has the following requirements for height and weight for those currently serving:

Any soldier failing to meet body fat standards after six months from date of entry to active service will be entered in the ABCP.

Enlisted Members Versus Commissioned Officers

In addition to deciding on a military service, if you have a four-year college bachelors degree , you should decide whether you want to join that service as a commissioned officer, or whether you wish to join as an enlisted member. Commissioned officers make a lot more money than enlisted members. Additionally, their “quality of life” is generally better . However, they have a much greater degree of responsibility.

The competition for commissioned slots is tough, and merely having a college degree is not enough. Factors such as college grade point average and officer accession test scores are given much weight. It’s also much harder to get approved for waivers for commissioned applicants than it is for enlisted applicants.

If you decide you wish to apply for a commission, ask the recruiter to refer you to an “Officer Accessions Recruiter.”

A Short History Of Flat Feet In The Military

While I couldnt find any specific information on when it no longer became a disqualifying condition, several sources noted that it likely started sometime between World War 2 and the beginning of the Vietnam war.

Later in the Vietnam War, the condition was no longer disqualifying.

Flat feet is exactly what it sounds like

Its a condition where, instead of having a normal arch in your feet, this arch is eliminated.

This gives it a flat appearance.

While most individuals dont display any symptoms, certain types of this condition can cause a wide variety of pain, particularly in the heel or arch area.

Army height and weight requirements are a crucial part of the screening process for future soldiers and it is something all officers and enlisted personnel must contend with as a condition of entry into military service.

Some sources cite data indicating that height/weight issues affect as many as one enlistment out of every four. The Army has published its height and weight standardswhich include both maximums AND minimums for heightin Army Regulation 6009 .

If you search online for this regulation, you will find plenty of outdated materialthere are versions of the regulation from 1986 floating around online and those who discover such documents may mistakenly believe they are current policy. Looking For A Deployment How

The Plan My Deployment website offers comprehensive information and resources for every phase of the deployment cycle.

The word deployment can mean different things, depending on your service members job, unit and service branch. Generally, deployment means a scheduled time away from the normal duty station, usually outside of the United States. It may mean seven months on a Navy ship, 12 months at a forward operating base or three months in a town with restaurants and shops youd recognize back home. Sometimes your service member may serve in dangerous situations, but they have intense training and are well prepared for the challenges they may face in their specific mission.

The deployment cycle starts when a service member is notified of a deployment and extends through any predeployment training, the actual deployment, and reunion and reintegration. Every deployment cycle is different, but here are some general things to know:

Army Recruiting Advice On Preparing To Meet Physical Standards

What Women Should Know Before Joining the Army

The Army has some standard advice for anyone considering a career as a soldier. Good body composition, the Army official site reminds, is best gained through proper diet and exercise. Examples of poor body composition are underdeveloped muscle groups, or excessive body fat. What should a potential recruit do to prepare for the measurements and weigh-ins they will be required to perform at the recruit level?

The Army philosophy in this area includes the idea that poor body composition, has a negative effect on appearance, self-esteem, and negatively influences attitude and morale and Army recruiting literature encourages applicants to get involved in a fitness program that incorporates running, swimming, and cycling.

Consult a physician before starting any new fitness regimen, especially a rigorous one. Do not rely on fad diets, exercise programs that start only weeks before your weigh-in date, etc.

Your recruiter will have advice for you on what kinds of fitness programs will best prepare you for basic training, but you may need to use a modified version of such a program if you are struggling to meet the physical standards mentioned above.

Your Testicles Have To Be Normal

You have to have normal genitalia to be in the military. According to the Tucson recruiting office, one man who was trying to join couldnt because his testicles were too big. As a result, he was permanently disqualified. However, thats not the only concern. The absence of one or both testicles, whether congenital, acquired, or unexplained absence of a testicle is also unacceptable according to military standards.

See What Youre Made Of

The military has a limitless amount of challenges if pushing yourself physically and mentally interests you.

There is a myriad amount of schools that you can sign up for, like Airborne School, Air Assault School, or even Ranger School.

Additionally, there are always higher tiers of operations you can try out for, like Ranger Battalion, Navy SEALs, Green Berets, or even the top-secret Delta Force.

COLORADO SPRINGS The sergeant in charge of one of the busiest Army recruiting centers in Colorado, Sgt. First Class Dustin Comes, joined the Army, in part, because his father served. Now two of his four children say they want to serve, too. And he will not be surprised if the other two make the same decision once they are a little older.

Hey, if thats what your calling is, I encourage it, absolutely, said Sergeant Comes, who wore a dagger-shaped patch on his camouflage uniform, signifying that he had been in combat.

Enlisting, he said, enabled him to build a good life where, despite yearlong deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he felt proud of his work, got generous benefits, never worried about being laid off, and earned enough that his wife could stay home to raise their children.

Show me a better deal for the common person, he said.

    What Are Flat Feet

Before getting into the whether or not its a military disqualification, lets first discuss the specifics of the ailment.

It is estimated that about 25% of the general population suffer from this condition, however, it is not considered life-threatening.

Development Of Army Body Fat Equations

An Army study was conducted to establish population-specific body fat equations that could be used by soldiers to estimate body fat without special instruction and without costly equipment . As an interim method of body fat measurement, the Army adopted the Durnin-Womersley skinfold equations . This method required the standardization of measurement procedures by trained medical personnel throughout the Army, using appropriate equipment . Commanders were distressed by the difficulty of obtaining consistent, accurate skinfold measurements and by the jump in body fat that occurred between certain birthdays for the same sum of skinfold measurements . Accordingly, the new method was to use simple measurements and avoid the use of age. The DOD directive noted that this assessment was to be applied only to the high-risk group who failed an initial weight screen. A later amendment to the directive also required the services to use a circumference-based method, developed by comparison to hydrostatic weight, which achieved a minimum correlation of 0.85 .

Why Was Flat Feet A Disqualifying Condition

During World War 1 and 2, flat feet was seen as a disqualifying condition for 2 reasons:

  • It was seen as a sign of low class and poor health, and
  • High arches were seen as high class and full of vigor
  • This myth was perpetuated by the fact that many doctors believed it would cause disadvantages for the individual while hiking on long marches.

While this is true to a certain extent, its only really applicable to those with symptoms.

Us Army Policy On Flat Feet

What the military can teach you about business endurance ...

Just like with the other 5 branches of the military, flat feet is not a disqualifying condition for the US Army.

    However, you should exercise caution.

Army training consists of running long distances, balancing on obstacles, and other instances where youre on your feet for a long duration.

You may be able to join the US Army, but it could be a very painful experience if you have flat feet.

For example, you may show asymptomatic signs when you initially enlist and begin recruit training.

But over time, you may start to develop symptoms that could cause you to become ineffective at your MOS.

OMK spoke with Sergeant Hewitt, an Army recruiter stationed in Atlanta, GA to get a definitive answer.

Heres what he had to say:

With the Army, it is possible that Flat feet is an issue. The sergeant has seen people turned away for the condition, and the Army will send you to an orthopedic doctor to get it checked out.

The doctor will decide based on standard and expertise. With the Army, it is possible to get corrective surgery base on policies, but Ive never heard of this before.
