Security Forces Guard The Front Gate
Some military basesa small number comparatively speakingdont have any gate guards. Certain facilities may be accessible by Common Access Card or other entry control methods. In these cases only those who have the swipe cards or other means of access can physically enter the area.
But for most situations, you can expect to drive to a front gate of a military base and be met with an armed Security Forces member who is charged with making sure only authorized personnel enter the base.
For Uber Eats drivers, DoorDash or GrubHub delivery vehicles, the guards at the front gate are people you want to get to know since they will decide whether you get to enter the base or not. Security Forces are your friends, not your adversaries. And these guards have specific procedures they are required to follow to control entry.
If you are denied entry its not because of a decision the guards make individually, but rather what their regulations require them to do. You wont be able to bend the rules any gate guard who offers to help you bend the rules will likely not be working the front gate very long.

In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid drivers license from any U.S. state. According to the company, military veterans make up roughly 13% of Lyft drivers in San Diego County and more than 1,000 drivers throughout the county have access to the base.
It can be costly or prohibited for military personnel to bring cars from their home state, so they rely heavily on services like Lyft to get around, said Lyft driver Victor Gonzalez, a member of Lyft San Diegos Driver Advisory Council.
As part of the expansion, the company said it will also share revenue generated by the pilot project with the MCCS, which will use the funds to support Marine Corps recreation programs.
Marine Corps Community Services and Lyft continue to facilitate efficient and economical transportation options for the residents of Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton with this pilot program, Camp Pendleton spokesman Capt. Luke Weaver said. The last six months have seen an increase in passenger usage as the program grows.
Roughly 70,000 people travel on, off and around the base each day, according to the Marine Corps.

How Lyft Is Working With The Us Military
Lyft is testing a new ride-hailing feature at Camp Pendleton in San Diego designed to make it easier to pick up and drop off passengers at U.S. military installations.
The base mode feature launched Tuesday in partnership with the U.S. military. Hailing a ride using the Lyft app can be a problem for people living or commuting to and from military bases because of security issues. The app might match a driver with a passenger on the base. But in most cases, the driver cant access the base, according to Lyft.
The base mode feature only matches passengers to drivers who are allowed to access the base. These drivers might be military, military spouses, or retired veterans.
Lyft says it will sharerevenue with the military that is generated by the base mode feature. A portion of the revenue will be invested into recreation programs designed to support and strengthen the Marine Corps community, Lyft said in a statement Tuesday.
Lyft sees this as an opportunity to get more passengers and drivers on its network. If successful, the U.S. military could reduce costs of operating and maintaining fleet vehicles on bases.
The ride-hailing company is also collaborating with Fort Meade, a U.S. Army installation that is the largest employer in the state of Maryland with more than 12,000 residents and another 40,000 people who commute there daily. Selected Lyft drivers will be prescreened to have access to the base through a product developed jointly with the military.

Successful Pilot Program Automatically Pairs Riders and Drivers on Base, Active Duty Military and Dependents with Any Valid U.S. State Drivers License Can Now Become Lyft Drivers
Camp Pendleton CA One year after integrating Lyft at Camp Pendleton in a pilot program, the transportation network and the U.S. Marine installation are broadening the pilot, making ride requests even easier and increasing its pool of eligible drivers with a new California law.
Before the base-Lyft integration was introduced, requesting a ride was problematic for people living or commuting to and from the military base because of required security clearances. The program is a win-win for Lyft and military service men and women, as it provides affordable and accessible transportation at the base and provides job opportunities to veterans and spouses of active duty military, among others. Camp Pendleton has a daytime population of approximately 70,000 people, including active duty service members, military families and civilian workers, according the official website of the United States Marine Corps.
In May 2018, Lyft launched Base Mode in the Lyft app to make it easier to pick up and drop off passengers at Camp Pendleton. There is no longer a need to toggle Base Mode, as Lyft has integrated base rides that automatically match riders to drivers who are allowed entrance on Camp Pendleton.

Requirements For Getting On A Military Base
Accessing a military base has become stricter, chiefly in the wake of 9/11. Civilians visiting a military base must now provide a REAL ID from their state. Those that do not have acceptable forms of ID must be escorted by a sponsor who does.
Alternative forms of ID accepted include a US passport, US permanent resident card, and Veterans health ID card.
REAL IDs are not really a new type of ID. They are rather a certification on already existing drivers licenses and state ID cards. These conform to federal security standards that help stop identity theft and fake IDs.
REAL ID status is denoted by a gold or black star on the front of the license. You receive this on the renewal of your license with the DMV. To get this you will have to provide more paperwork on proof of residency and social security number.
For many felons, getting a REAL ID drivers license can be hard. This is often the case where crimes were driving-related. It is common for offenses that involved drugs and alcohol to have their licenses suspended or revoked.
Those convicted of reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, and commission of a crime while in a vehicle may face similar hardship. Hence, if a judge revoked or suspended your license, you may not be able to access this.
Thus, without a drivers license, it likely means not being able to obtain a REAL ID.
While REAL ID is not a must, it will affect access to federal facilities and air travel.

Do Military Bases Conduct Background Checks
Bases now have what is called a visitor control center. As the name suggests, it is a facility that regulates access to bases for non-active military personnel and visitors.
Before this, entry to bases was pretty much left in the hands of gate guards.
Many bases would not assess all vehicle occupants. They would just focus on the driver. Sadly, due to security concerns, this has now changed.
At the VCC, a visitor must undergo a basic on-the-spot background check. This can take just a few minutes.
For those with a recurring need to access the base, they later undergo automated checks.
Depending on the DOD installations, disqualifiers may vary. As a general rule of thumb, violent felonies can prevent access. Misdemeanor and some felonies are evaluated on a case-to-case basis.
Would You Use A Military Uber/lyft
Question for active duty personnel and their family that do live on base or have lived on base:
Have you had issues with getting a Lyft/Uber to pick you up or drop you off on base? If you do would you use a ride-share service that is dedicated to giving rides to military personnel and their families? The driver would be registered to be allowed on base so they are able to pick you up and drop you off at your house/dorm/work.
If you where to use this service, how often a month do you think you would use it? 1-5 times, 5-10 times, or more.
More of a question for the dependents:
Would this be something that you would be interesting in doing as a weekend gig/part-time/full-time?
This is a research project I’m working on. If you wish to help out and are able to ask 1-3 people and let me know what they say I would appreciate it!
