S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the five active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Age Requirement For Applicants In Different Navy Jobs

Can I Join The Military At 17

For first-time applicants, you must be at least 18 years old or 17 years with your parents consent.

The maximum age for active-duty officers non-prior service Navy applicants is 39 years as of 2019. It was increased from 34 in 2018. The minimum age remains 17 with consent from parents or legal guardian.

The minimum age for Non-prior service applicants to the Navy Reserve is 18 years while the maximum age is 39 years.

To serve as a Navy Officer, you must be at least 19 years and not more than 42 years. However, this depends on your specialty. Waivers are granted for some positions, especially those in high demand.

For example, Navy SEALs require you to be between 17 and 28 years old before you reach BUD/S.

With that said, waivers have been granted for guys as old as 30 years old.

There have even been a few Navy SEAL candidates that have been even older.

For example, one guy who attended BUD/S graduated when he was 39 years old.

This is a BIG exception, however, and I would say the chances of you getting a waiver beyond 30 years old are slim to none.

Thats not all. To be eligible to serve in the U.S. Navy, you need to meet more than the age requirements.

Are You Having Second Thoughts

If you choose not to join the military after signing up for the DEP, all you have to do is not show up and you will not be in the military. You do not have to have any further contact with your recruiter or anyone else in the military. You are not obligated by law, or any authority, to answer the door or the phone, or to go anywhere with the recruiter. Again, all you have to do is not show up and you will not be in the military.

Recruiters are under tremendous pressure to fulfill their obligation to get people to join the military. Often, when a person in the DEP informs the recruiter that he or she has changed his or her mind and no longer wants to join the military, the recruiter will say it is too late and that there is nothing that can be done. The recruiter may tell the person he or she must report on the date scheduled. Recruiters often say things like, If you dont show up you will be AWOL you will go to jail and get a Dishonorable Discharge. It will ruin your life.

THIS IS NOT THE TRUTH. If a recruiter tells you this, he or she is violating military regulations that state that recruiters cannot threaten or harass people in the DEP. The Army regulations explain it this way:

This quotation is from the Army, but every branch of the military has similar wording in their regulations.

You dont have to go. If you dont go, you are not in the military. Its as simple as that.

Military Branches Limit How Many Can Enlist Without A High School Diploma

All branches of service restrict how many new recruits may enter military service each year without a high school diploma. According to some reports, this is due to statistics which tend to indicate a higher number of unsuccessful basic trainees come from backgrounds that do not include a diploma.

Those who want to enter the military as quickly as possible should know that they may technically qualify to serve, but their status as without a high school diploma may push their application to the following year if the quota for non-diploma holders has already been met.

But Why Would My Recruiter Pressure And Coerce Me Or Lie About My Rights

Recruiters have a job to do. They have a certain quota they need to meet each month. You dont count towards the quota until you report for boot camp. If a recruiter consistently fails to meet this quota, they get poor evaluations, fail to advance through the ranks as required, and/or get transferred to less desirable job assignments. They might even be deployed to a war zone. It is in the best interest of the recruiter to get you to sign up and go to basic training.

The United States has an all-volunteer military. That means that no one should be forced to join the military who does not want to go into the military. This includes those who join the DEP and then change their mind.

Are You Eligible To Join The Military

Can I Join The Military At 17

Eligibility rules can be a little confusing. There are different rules for enlisting and for officer programs.

Enlisting: Enlisted members do the hands-on work of the military. They need at least a high school degree a GED may not suffice.

Officer: Officers are the managers of the military. Most officer programs require a college degree at minimum and are very competitive. Many officers have master’s or higher degrees.

Before you visit your local recruiter, be sure you meet the minimum qualifications for serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Some qualifications are required by all five services:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
  • You must be at least 17 years old .
  • You must have a high school diploma.
  • You must pass a physical medical exam.

For each branch, there are slightly different enlistment requirements:

  • Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test.
  • Be between the ages of 17-35

If You Havent Earned Your Diploma Yet And Want To Join The Military Out Of High School

Any recruiter will urge a potential new recruit to complete high school first before trying to enter the military. That said, military recruiting involves something known as the Delayed Enlistment program where those who are not technically eligible to serve yet due to age or school status may enter into a provisional agreement with the service they wish to join.

Delayed Enlistment may put the enlistee into a program to familiarize them with military life, procedures, what to expect in basic training, etc. It can be a big help to those who want to serve, but are not yet eligible to become full-fledged military recruits.

Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. You will not be at sea during your entire Navy career. During your sea tour, you may live off-base nearby, but must be available to travel with the ship for deployments or training.

A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

The minimum and maximum enlistment age for joining the military differs by each branch of the military. The earliest is 17 with parental consent and the maximum is 39 but see below for the specific age limits by each branch of service.

This does not mean that the age requirements are not similar, but there is no Defense Department-wide standard. Each branch of service sets their own.

Understand How Recruiters Think

The military puts a lot of pressure on recruiters. Their Job perfomance is not evaluated according to how well they help each person find their true path in life. Their Performance is rated according to how many people they get to join their branch of the service. Once a recruiter has invested time in getting someone to sign a DEP contract, they will typically not give up trying to keep that person in, until it becomes obvious that retaining that person is a lost cause and their time would be better spent on someone else. Then recruiters cut their losses and move on. Different recruiters come to this point at different times depending on the signals they get from the person. Different recruiters use different tactics to keep people from leaving. The sooner someone sends the recruiter a clear signal, the sooner the recruiter will let go and put their energy elsewhere. If a recruit sends a recruiter the message that indicates the recruit still feels obligated, the recruiter will likely persist. Recruiters know that recruits can get out of the DEP, but they usually don’t advertise that fact.
