Getting Ready To Train

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

How Much Debt Is Too Much For A Security Clearance

Answer to: Which Branch of the Military Should I join ...

While it is generally conceded that excessive debt is a cause for denying security clearances, no branch of the military has a set amount of debt that will result in being denied.

In fact, the term used for potentially disqualifying a candidate for a security clearance is excessive indebtedness which is open for wide interpretation based on a soldiers income and assets, which vary widely.

A better gauge might be the individuals debt-to-income ratio, which is measured by dividing your total monthly debt by your monthly income. For example, if you owe $2,000 a month and have income of $4,000, your DTI would be 50% .

That is considered an excessive amount of debt, but not a disqualifying amount unless the debt has been delinquent for some time.

Us Military Enlistment Credit Checks

Enlisting in the military for many people may seem like a way to make a fresh start. Unfortunately, when it comes to debt and other financial responsibilities, enlistment may not be a fresh start that is open to you.

A bad credit history can affect your plans to enlist and advance in the military. If you have unpaid loans which are significantly overdue and/or in collections, you can expect to be denied enlistment until you resolve the problem. A history of bad credit could also affect your security clearance eligibility, which could make many military jobs unavailable to you.

How Does It Vary Among Different Branches Of The Military

In its financial review, the Coast Guard seeks evidence that an applicant has their financial house in order, says Jonathan Lindberg, petty officer first class with the Coast Guard Recruiting Command. Applicants shouldnt have recent repossession or bankruptcies or be delinquent on payments.

In addition, the Coast Guard requires that applicants debt-to-income ratio based on their projected Coast Guard salary be lower than 30% in order for them to join.

Thats to protect the person thats thinking of joining, Lindberg says. The income when you join the military at first can be very low. We just want to make sure were not putting that person in a tough spot with a financial hardship.

The Air Force also looks for signs of financial troubles, such as a history of bankruptcy or bad credit, but its debt-to-income ratio limit is 40%. Applicants whose credit reports contain that type of information will be reviewed by the squadron commander, who may ask the applicant for an explanation before making a financial eligibility determination.

The Army, Navy and Marine Corps usually run credit checks only on applicants who need to qualify for a security clearance or who require a dependency waiver. But they forgo hard-and-fast rules in favor of a case-by-case approach.

Joining The Military With Debt Anyone

Ive been going through some of the subreddits and have seen quite a few posts about people questioning their ability to join any of the branches with a higher than average amount of debt. I know the Air Force has a standard to measure a new recruits debt to income ratio.

But, my question is simple. Has anyone reading this been able to get past this threshold and join with a pretty good amount of debt? Either with waiver or not? I would love to hear your stories/advice/experience with this topic.

Thanks!

I think it’s security clearance based. I have prior delinquent debt i’ve been working down since my divorce. When i enlisted, i tried to get into an MOS with a TS clearance, but was denied. It’s mainly about how can you be influenced by a foreign party to release TS information in exchange for money for the debts. The army knows nothing specifically about your character. So, it’s a red flag going in. I heard it’s easier to get a hold of the clearance when you’ve been in for a while and the military is more aware if you’re a shit bag or not. But, that’s purely anecdotal. Best of luck either way!

What Do To Before You Enlist And If Youre Rejected

Join the Military to Get Student Loans Forgiven?

If youre interested in joining the military, get your free credit report to check for any mistakes, and see if there are any issues that might give a recruiter pause.

Even if financial issues prevent you from immediately joining the military, you may still be able to enlist in the future. Just as applicants who fail the physical fitness test to join the military can get into shape and reapply, those who dont meet the financial requirements can spend some time paying down their debt and improving their credit and then reapply.

The military doesnt want you to come to them as a last resort, where youre just looking for a job to pay off your debt.

How Debt Affects You In The Military

If you are already enlisted, then its vital to be aware how debt affects you in the military. Being in debt affects military clearances, so you could risk advancing in the military. The military will give you a financial review to determine if you are a financially responsible member of society. If your credit store declines while you are enlisted, if you owe child support or other unpaid debts or suffer from a bankruptcy these are all factors in how debt can affect military clearance.

The Military Lending Act Of 2006

The Military Lending Act in 2006 limits such predatory practices. More relief is offered through the Veterans Administration. The VA home loan program usually looks at only the previous 12 months of credit history unless bankruptcies, tax liens or collections are involved. It also doesnt require a down payment, and interest rates are typically lower than those offered with conventional loans. Military service members can also get a loan by refinancing their house through the VA. Qualified veterans can use the Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loan to obtain a lower interest rate or change from a variable rate loan to a fixed rate. If you want to take cash out of your home equity, the Cash-Out Refinance Home Loans programs lets you replace your current loan with one that has new terms. The danger is your house is collateral and can be foreclosed if you dont make the payments. Such decisions require careful consideration.

Reducing Behaviors To Numbers

Pros and Cons of Joining the Military to Pay for College

Your credit report is often considered a direct reflection of the financial risk you represent to an employer, lender, or other entity. Every day, employers, insurers, lenders, cell phone providers, and others make decisions about who they think will be reliable based on information in your credit report. Its not personal.

These organizations simply crunch the numbers and base their decisions on the law of averages. The way to get that in your favor is to increase your credit score.

S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the six active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

That student loan repayment program is used as an enlistment incentive for those joining the military and is not available for commissioning officers. It has some pretty stringent requirements, and whether you qualify also depends on the type of loans you have.

Military & Veteran Debt Statistics

Military medicine: Should you let Uncle Sam pay your tuition?

Embarrassed that youve let things get out of hand? Worried that youre the only one in uniform fretting over financial stuff? Americans in uniform have cringed over the state of their finances since the Revolutionary War. Why, Benedict Arnold went from hero to the man whose name is synonymous with treason and traitor in part because of money.

Dont be like Ben. Instead, use the statistics below, derived from an aging, but still useful, study by FINRA Investor Education Foundation, as a spur to help you get your finances turned around.

  • 36% of military families have problems meeting their financial obligations
  • 25% of respondents with checking accounts have overdrawn their accounts.
  • 10% of families with a mortgage loan have been late on at least one payment in the past two years.
  • 3% of military families has foreclosed on their homes
  • 3% of military families have declared themselves bankrupt in the past 2 years.
  • 9% of those contributing to their retirement funds have taken a loan in the past 12 months, and 6% have done a permanent hardship withdrawal from their retirement plan.
  • More than ¼ of credit card holders owe $10,000 or more on their account
  • 19% are dissatisfied with their current financial condition only 26% are satisfied and 55% are neutral.

So, lots of you are in pretty much the same place. The good news: A FINRA study last year indicates that veterans are, by most measures, doing better than civilians when it comes to managing money.
