Military Age Restrictions: How Old Is Too Old To Serve

How To Join The Army ( The Enlistment Process, Recruiter, ASVAB, MEPS, DEPS )

In 2012, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure.

Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July.

Can You Earn More Retirement Points

Absolutely. This is a topic unto itself, as there are many, many ways to earn additional retirement points. This can include performing additional training, being activated or mobilized, Professional Military Education , taking certain correspondence courses, serving on an honor guard or burial duties, temporary active duty, and much more.

Federal law limits the number of inactive duty points you can earn each retirement year.

    • Reserve year ends on or after 30 Oct 2007: max of 130 Points
    • Reserve year ends on or after 29 Oct 2000: max of 90 Points
    • Reserve year ends on or after 23 Sep 1996: max of 75 Points
    • Before 23 Sep 1996: max of 60 Points

These limits only apply to inactive points. Active duty points dont count toward that limit. The maximum number of total points you can earn each year is 365 .

The Minimum Age Permitted To Join The Military

In all cases except for the Navy Reserve, the minimum age permitted is 17 with parental consent in writing. Those 18 and older are permitted to join the military without parental consent. The Navy Reserve minimum age is 18.

    Military Maximum Age Requirements:

Did you know there is an upper age limit for all branches of military service?

    Military Age Limits:

    • Army Age Limit: 35 for active duty, Guard, and Army Reserve
    • Navy Age Limit: 34 for active duty, 39 for Navy Reserve
    • Air Force Age Limit: 39 for active duty and Guard, 38 for Air Force Reserve
    • Coast Guard Age Limit: 27 for active duty, 39 for Coast Guard Reserve
    • Space Force Age Limit: Contact an Air Force recruiter for eligibility requirements

Prior service military members may not be subject to the same age limitations as new recruits depending on age, the nature of military service, recruiting demand, and other factors.

Under federal law, the oldest recruit any military branch can enlist is 42 however each service may set their own policy below that age limit.

Age Requirements Are Supplemented By Education Requirements

How to Join the Military After Age Thirty

In most cases, the minimum age a new recruit may enter military service is 17 . However, a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Some branches of service may, depending on recruiting issues at any given time, offer alternatives such as allowing a new recruit who has a GED with college credits. Having a GED may subject the enlistee to additional standards not applied to those who have high school diplomas.

If the applicant does not meet the stricter standards for GED holders without college coursework, it may be possible to enroll in college to earn additional credit hours. This may be required by the branch of service applied for so you will need to try again under different standards.

Drill Attendance And Annual Training Participation Is Important For You And Your Unit

My recommendation is to do your best to attend every UTA and do your AT days if able. Most units have required training and appointments you need to attend during your Drill weekends. Missing out on those can make it difficult to stay on top of your training requirements. And your two week annual tour is a great time to become more proficient in your military duties. Missing that time may make you less effective in your unit.

If you do miss a Drill, I recommend trying to make it up if or when possible*. I have done this a couple times. For example, I missed a Drill Weekend while my family and I were relocating to a new state. I made it up the following month by coming in two days early. This gave me 4 consecutive Drill days, which is a great way to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.

*There are two date considerations when making up Drill dates and UTAs: The first is the fiscal year , and the second is your Anniversary Year End , which is the anniversary of the date you joined the Guard or Reserves. You can find this in your annual points statement or through your personnel or human resources office. You will need to make up missed Drills or UTAs before your AYE for it to count toward your Good Year, and you may need to schedule certain events around the fiscal year, when budgets can become tight.

Medical Conditions That Can Keep You From Joining The Military

Below, you will find details from the Army‘s “Standards of Medical Fitness.” These standards generally apply to all other branches as well. Remember that most of these conditions are not necessarily permanently disqualifying, but they are red flags.

If you have had a medical complication at any time in your life that is mentioned here, then you need to tell your recruiter. They will tell you whether your condition can be waived, or if it is permanently disqualifying. Remember that if you do not get an official waiver and your condition later is discovered, you most likely will be dishonorably discharged for fraudulent enlistment. The choice is yours.

To become a Naval or Aviator, you must be between the ages of 19 and 26 at the time you enter flight training. Adjustments can be made up to 24 months for those with prior service, and up to 48 months for those already in the military at the time of application. To become a Naval/USMC aviator, you will have to pass the Aviation Selection Test Battery .

It consists of five timed subsets: mathematics and verbal, mechanical comprehension, aviation and nautical, spatial perception, and a survey gauging interest in aviation. About 10,000 candidates sit for the exam each year. The Aviation Selection Test Battery is used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to select candidates for pilot and flight officer training programs.

Some Guard And Reserve Members May Serve Much More Than Average

Everything written so far is based on the minimum service requirement. But many Guard and Reserve members serve much more than the minimum. There are many reasons for this, including their unit needs, their career field, because they volunteered to serve additional days, mobilizations, deployments, being activated, and many other reasons.

Some members serve in career fields with very high operations tempos. Some career fields allow their members to serve almost as many days as they want crews, special ops, certain medical fields, and other high-demand or undermanned career fields).

Some members also volunteer for orders as often as possible, picking up orders whenever the need or opportunity arises.

Is There A Specific Degree I Need In Order To Be Eligible For An Afrotc Scholarship

To be eligible for an AFROTC scholarship, cadets must be enrolled in a degree program identified as desired/mandatory for an AFSC, or in an approved foreign language. It is very important that you first assess the degree program before enrolling into that program. You need to evaluate if you are capable of handling the course load for that program while maintaining a term 2.0 GPA cumulative GPA of a 2.5 or higher, in addition to earning passing grades. It is important to note that a specific degree is not required to join the program, placing yourself within a degree program that is above your abilities simple to be eligible for a scholarship will not help you if you cannot maintain the academic standards necessary to activate a scholarship.

    Military Age Restrictions By Branch

At age 66, Broun still serves as a doctor in the Navy Reserve. In an interview with Army Times, he called the enlistment age cap an arbitrary policy.

There are people who want to serve and are physically fit, he said. There are some 20-year-olds who cannot run a mile.

Since Brouns attempt in 2012, the military policy on age restrictions has changed. The Air Force, for example, raised its maximum age. See the age requirements for Active Duty enlistees of each branch below:

    • Army: 17-35 years old
    • Navy: 17-34 years old
    • Air Force: 17-39 years old
    • Coast Guard: 17-27 years old

In general, the Defense Department restricts enlistment to those 35 and younger. Prior enlisted service members can subtract their previous years of service from their age in order to extend eligibility. For example, the current age cutoff in the Air Force is 39. This means that a 31-year-old veteran with four years of prior service experience would still be eligible to reenlist.

Rep. Susan Davis of the Armed Services Committee personnel panel has said the risks outnumbered gains when it came to enlisting older personnel. She said they are not only more likely to become injured, but also take more time to recover than their younger counterparts.
