You Will Be Held To A Higher Standard Forever
The number one awful thing about the Army that nobody tells you is that you will forever be held to a higher standard!
Lexington and Concord, Gettysburg, Normandy, and all the soldiers who fought before you in many historic battles have paved the way. It is now your turn. If you think this is an honor, then you are right. What you might not know is that this is also a huge responsibility, and it will last until the day you die.
Your friends will expect you to be in great shape even after you are discharged. Your family will expect you to be calm and patient. Your coworkers will expect you to lead the way and handle stress easily. Everyone you know will expect you to win. Nobody will expect you to complain. If you oversleep, get drunk, become poor, gain weight, etc., then you will disappoint the civilians who look up to you.
This responsibility brings out the best in soldiers and veterans, but it lasts foreverâand it will never be easy to deal with.

Earn Respect And Admiration From Your Peers
I cant tell you how often my friends introduce me to others by mentioning my service in the Army.
Almost always, I get the same reaction.
Wow. Thats really admirable of you.
I never brag about it, but, to be honest, it always feels good to hear.
Not to mention, everyone always wants to buy me a beer.
Child Care + Child Development Centers
CDC priority changes and closures are at the discretion of the installation commander. Many locations are limiting care to mission-essential personnel and those families with deployed soldiers or soldiers at combat training centers.
The updated guidance includes additional options for screening children upon arrival to ensure children who have a fever or other signs of illness are not admitted to a child care facility. The additional options may be useful when personal protective equipment is in short supply such as, initial social distancing to observe any signs of illness or reliance on a barrier/partition.
Fee Assistance + Child Care Aware
If you have pulled your children from child care due to center closure or coronavirus concerns, Child Care Aware of America requests that you state the reason why the child was not in care when submitting documents for the fee assistance program. For example: Child was not in care from 3/1/2021-3/19/2021 due to Coronavirus concerns. Cost of care for the month of March is $750.
Should you have additional questions, contact CCAoA at 1-800-424-2246 or email at . In your email include your branch, family ID, and which program you are applying for. You can continue to check your status online at www.childcareaware.org by logging into your account.

Your Testicles Have To Be Normal
You have to have normal genitalia to be in the military. According to the Tucson recruiting office, one man who was trying to join couldnt because his testicles were too big. As a result, he was permanently disqualified. However, thats not the only concern. The absence of one or both testicles, whether congenital, acquired, or unexplained absence of a testicle is also unacceptable according to military standards.
Is The Reserve Component Right For You Find Out
- Visit the retention counselor or transitional recruiter on your installation.

Navy Reserve Spent The Last Couple Decades Consolidating Their Drilling Sites And Two Say Thats A Problem If Youre Not Near A Homeport:
Having just made the drive in bad weather, but not snowing. driving 400 miles round trip in Wyoming, in winter, to drill, not happening.
If the Navy had a more decentralized reserve like the Army National Guard it might help. Try finding a city of more than 20,000 people without some sort of ANG unit. Heck, even towns of 10,000 or smaller often have them. Now, try finding a Navy Reserve unit in the same town. Im in the middle of nowhere. There are five Army Guard units within 100 miles. The closest Navy units are more than 200 miles away.
two-year deferment from mobilization allows you to get settled in your civilian life/career and get a real feel for what the Reserve has to offer. There are ~125 drill sites across the country. I understand that many folks do not live in/near fleet concentration areas, but we are not the size of the National Guard . The Guards mission is the State and having a drill center on every corner makes sense.
Finally, I will offer that one of the best intangible benefits of the Reserve is the opportunity to network. Your new unit may consist of educators, project managers, financial planners, HR managers, and company vice-presidents. Being a unit superstar and building a reputation as a solid performer will go a long way when/if you are looking for future opportunities . Its never an easy decision when you are trying to plan out the next 15 years, but if you do decide to close the door just try to keep the keys handy.

Awful Things About The Army You Might Not Know
Before I begin listing and explaining my points, I want to make it clear that this article is not meant to be disrespectful or insulting to any branch of the military. I’m not bashing the Army or America by shedding light on the unsatisfactory aspects of service. Also, I don’t want to scare anybody or discourage serving in a branch of the military because the Army isn’t scary. If you sincerely want to serve, then that’s awesome!
So what’s this article actually about? Let’s put it this way: If you want to buy a car, you can go to a dealership and stare at a car endlessly. You can walk around it as many times as you want, maybe even kick the tires. But remember, tires can be changed. You have to look under the hood. If you want to make the right decision about purchasing a car or pursuing a military career, you have to do your homework. This article will help you do that.
I’ll focus on the Army in this article because it’s the only branch of the military that I served in. I can’t speak for the other branches. To be fair, I have another article titled 7 Awesome Things About the Army Your Recruiter Will Never Tell You. Take a look at it after you read this one.
Finally, throughout this article, I’ll refer to the soldier as a “he.” I’m only doing so to keep things simple. I know there are many female service members, and I am proud to have served alongside them. Thank you for understanding.
If You Dont Like Exercise
It should go without saying that the military is going to demand that you run, push, pull, sit-up, and climb on a regular basis.
You dont need to be a stud to succeed in the military, but if you really hated P.E. in high school, I dont suggest joining up.

What Is The Delayed Entry Program And Can I Get Out Of It
Information current as of March 2018
NOTE: If your US citizenship is conditional upon serving in the US military, your status could be affected by ANY separation or discharge from the military. We encourage service members in this situation to contact an immigration attorney for assistance and advice. You can request free legal counsel from the American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistance Program.
Most people who enlist join through the Delayed Entry Program sometimes called the Future Soldiers Program. This allows someone to sign up for the military prior to the date when they will ship out for initial training. People in the DEP are unpaid and are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, UCMJ.
After Joining the DEP, Some People change their Minds. During the delay before leaving for basic training some people feel they were pressured into something they werent sure about. Others have life changesperhaps they decide to go to college, get married, or they get their dream job. They no longer wish to be locked into years of military service. Because the DEP is the easiest phase to get out of the military, it a critical time for anyone having second thoughts to give serious consideration to whether they truly belong in the military.
Understand How Recruiters Think
The military puts a lot of pressure on recruiters. Their Job perfomance is not evaluated according to how well they help each person find their true path in life. Their Performance is rated according to how many people they get to join their branch of the service. Once a recruiter has invested time in getting someone to sign a DEP contract, they will typically not give up trying to keep that person in, until it becomes obvious that retaining that person is a lost cause and their time would be better spent on someone else. Then recruiters cut their losses and move on. Different recruiters come to this point at different times depending on the signals they get from the person. Different recruiters use different tactics to keep people from leaving. The sooner someone sends the recruiter a clear signal, the sooner the recruiter will let go and put their energy elsewhere. If a recruit sends a recruiter the message that indicates the recruit still feels obligated, the recruiter will likely persist. Recruiters know that recruits can get out of the DEP, but they usually don’t advertise that fact.

Why Join The Military
With the cost of college at an all-time high and continuing to grow, many high school graduates are considering enlisting in the military in order to give themselves a better shot at affording a post-secondary education. And, they are also finding that military service can help them achieve many other goals with plenty of lifelong benefits. Here are some of the main benefits of joining the military after high school.
Military Age Restrictions: How Old Is Too Old To Serve
In 2012, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure.
Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July.

The Coast Guard Is For You If:
Those wanting to pursue a career in law enforcement and security will see the Coast Guard has plenty of opportunities for it. If you are quite a fish in water and want to be a part of tight knit community, search and rescue swimmers are among the elite positions in the military.
Stay On Active Duty For As Long As Its Challenging And Fulfilling
Personally, I enjoyed my first 10 years of active duty. After my second submarine, my dual-military spouse and I wanted to stay in Pearl Harbor. I couldve taken just about any career-enhancing billet but we wanted collocation. There seemed to be plenty of billets in Hawaii and we werent interested in moving thousands of miles just for the job. Again.
I took the first Pearl Harbor vacancy that came up at my rotation date: shore duty on an admirals staff. I didnt appreciate that Ops & Plans was a 60-hour/week deadline-fueled job, and I wouldnt have cared. We were perpetually overwhelmed by real-world crises with submarine missions or by the inevitable paperwork crisis du jour. Even message traffic was largely screened by hand and routed in paper.
We also started our family as I started shore duty, which meant we encountered sleep deprivation at home as well as from work. We were overwhelmed on the domestic front too.

Your First Amendment Rights Will Be Limited While You’re Serving
Most service members easily accept this. I did. Even though I knew what I believed in, I also knew it wasn’t fair to use my uniform to push my personal beliefs on anyone else. The people who love to sell their beliefs wrapped in a flag with a pretty yellow ribbon on top will be annoyed to see that their rights to free speech are tossed right out the window.
Don’t get me wrong, you can always be an armchair activist maybe even go to a few protests or demonstrations, however, the second you identify yourself as a service member, you’ll be in deep trouble. As a military member, you’ll fight for America, but you’re not authorized to speak for it.
Still, the Army seems to favor Christianity. There’s lots of “oh, lord” this and “praise Jesus” that. This shouldn’t surprise anyone because the United States is populated by many Christians. As a Christian myself, I never did take it personally. However, many other soldiers who identify as Jewish, Muslim, atheist, etc. are forced to put their beliefs in the back seat while fighting for a constitution that guarantees religious freedom.
There is even a non-profit Military Religious Freedom Foundation that fights for the religious equality of American soldiers in the U.S. military. But don’t bring it up at any of the “prayer breakfasts” you might find yourself at. Think that was a joke? Join and see. Just don’t spill the salt.
Reserves And National Guard Are Different But Usually Not That Different
Often people who join the Reserves or National Guard are not put in the DEP. These people are eligible to attend paid drills usually in the Recruit Sustainment Program . Recruiters in these components sometimes try to use this difference to confuse people into thinking it is much harder for them to get out than it is for people in the DEP. Similar to the DEP, members of the reserve are also separated when they do not report to ship out for basic training. This is typically true for members of the National Guard as well, however because National Guard members are also subject to state jurisdiction, they can face penalties at the state level. While most states simply release people who don’t report, there are a few states that have punished some people for not reporting to basic or for missing drill. Anyone who has signed up for reserves or National Guard and not yet gone to boot camp can call a GI Rights counselor to discuss their situation and issues in their state: 877-447-4487.
