How Does The Air Forces Body Fat Percentage Standard Work

Air Force recruits must be within the following ranges to pass a physical readiness test known as a PRT. The PRT is designed to make sure that all applicants have reached a minimum level of physical fitness.

If you are between the ages of 17-29, you have to be within the minimum body fat percentage range in order to join the Air Force. If your body fat percentage is below 13%, then you must pass a physical readiness test known as a PRT.

If you do not pass the test, then you will be given a two-week period to lower your body fat percentage. If you fail again, then you will be given an additional three weeks to lower your body fat percentage.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

You can still serve the U.S. Armed Forces if you are obese by receiving a medical waiver. Approximately 20% of new recruits need a waiver for their weight to attend boot camp. However, those that receive a waiver must lose weight and reach minimum requirements prior to the end of boot camp to continue training.

What Are The Necessary Measurements

According to the US Army Regulation 600-9, the tape should be made of a non-stretchable material, preferably fiberglass. All circumference measurements should be taken horizontally:

  • Height – make sure you don’t wear shoes and stand up straight.
  • Neck – measure its circumference below the larynx .
  • Waist – measure it at the at the navel level for men, and around the narrowest part of the abdomen for women.
  • Hips – this measurement is needed for females only and should be taken at the widest part of the buttocks or hip.
  • You can input the values in both metric and imperial units. Having taken these measurements, you can use them to find your body shape.

    Assessment Of Recruit Motivation And Strength

    How Can I Join the Army?

    Also known as ARMS, the Assessment of Recruit Motivation and Strength are one of the ways of dealing with military recruiting and obesity. This is a program put in place by the U.S. Army and has become a source of waivers for recruits not fitting the BMI or body-fat percentage requirements.

    ARMS requires the recruit to complete a five-minute test known as a modified Harvard Step. Then, they must do a specific number of pushups per minute .

    If the recruit can pass the ARMS test, they will be able to enter the Army. However, they will be given a year of active duty to meet the weight requirements.

    When it comes to military recruiting and obesity, its a battle for every branch and for recruits. Its still possible to join, even if you dont fall into the weight requirements. The Marines are the most lenient, but with a waiver and the right physical ability, you can join other branches of the military, as well.

    Its best to start working on losing weight now, however. You will be given only a year to get in shape by the Army and every branch of the military will test your physical ability regularly.

    The Impact On The Health Care System

    Another way to assess the impact of body-fat standards on the military is to estimate their cost to the health care system. In 1998, according to the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database , active duty personnel made 9.1 million visits to ambulatory care clinics. Just over 40,000 of those visits were for a primary diagnosis of obesity or localized adiposity. An additional 2,700 visits were for a primary diagnosis of anorexia,bulimia, or other eating disorder. That is, less than one-half of 1 percent of all ambulatory visits made by active duty personnel were recorded as being primarily for concerns about body weight, body composition, or dysfunctional weight-loss practices. A different approach was reported by Robbins and colleagues , who examined anthropometrics, demographics, and health behaviors of 4,974 active duty Air Force men and women. This analysis found that more than 20 percent exceeded their maximum allowable weights and that this was associated with an increased cost of $22.8 million per year for medical care and lost workdays . Unfortunately, the statistics on visits to military clinics for weight-related matters do not provide a complete picture. Military personnel are likely to enroll in commercial weight-reduction programs or to self-treat with supplements or over-the-counter medications rather than call attention to their weight, which invites possible disciplinary action or separation from the service with loss of benefits.

    How To Lose Weight Before Meps

    It happens to the best of us. We get lazy and quit watching what we eat, or we become stressed and lose the time or motivation to exercise. However, if you have plans to join the United States Armed Forces, then those bad habits will only bring you grief.

    I’m speaking from experience. I dropped thirty pounds in a few months for the Air Force, and I am still struggling to stay at weight while I’m in the delayed enlistment program.

    If you are truly committed to joining a branch of the military, then from experience, I suggest that you lose the weight the right way. Otherwise if you cheat your way , it will only cause you more headaches while you wait to ship out to basic training.

    So here I will explain how to lose the weight correctly. However, I will also talk about a few ways to drop a few pounds too quickly, because chances are if you are going to do that, then you’ve already made you mind up about it. The least I can do is to help you do it the healthiest way possible so that you do not cause yourself long-term bodily harm.

    Air Force Height And Weight Requirements

    The current military weight requirements for Air Force recruits are as follows:

    Male Recruit 180 lbs to 199 lbs

    Female Recruit 165 lbs , no maximum weight limit

    Each branch of military has different weight requirements. The weight requirement depends on your height and age. They also can do a body fat percentage.

    Air Force Requirements:

    A recruit must be 4’10” or taller to enlist, and at this height the minimum weight is 91 pounds and the max weight is 131 pounds. With each additional inch of height, increase the minimum weight by three to four pounds and the maximum weight by five pounds.

    Army and National Guard

    Men must be five feet tall, while females can be 4’10”. With each inch, the min/max weight increases by about four pounds, and with each age bracket the weight requirements change more so than most other military branches. The female weight max at 4’8″ is 109 for recruits with prior military service, and the max is 112 for recruits who have not previously served with the Armed Forces that are between the ages of 17 and 20. For males of the same age group, the max weight at five feet is 132 pounds.

    • Females must not be over 30% body fat composition.
    • Males must not exceed a body fat composition of 24%.

    Ahlstrom gets Robinson back on track by reminding him of the specifics of better health: Drink a gallon of water a day, avoid the fast-food drive-through, work out regularly. Ahlstrom also recommends setting a “cheat day” once a week for indulging in a junk food treat as a reward for sticking to a lighter diet the rest of the time. Ahlstrom says he personally spends much of the week anticipating the double cheeseburger he allows himself on Friday nights.

    “Saturday nights are definitely my cheat day,” Robinson says. But also, he says, eating healthier has changed his taste for food. “Once you start drinking water, soda tastes disgusting.”

    Teaching this level of personal change is hard work, considering again this isn’t an official Army program, and success is far from guaranteed. Ahlstrom, for example, sometimes picks up potential recruits at home and drives them to workouts.

    “It’s hard, because your mind is going to quit before your body does,” Ahlstrom says, so keeping the motivation of those he mentors high is critical. For some individuals, it may take years to lose the weight. And he knows some will drop out.

    But there are inspiring examples of success. Last year, for example, Ahlstrom helped another young man lose 100 pounds to enlist successfully. Robinson, he says, showed the same level of commitment to hard work.

    “We did it. We’re here,” Robinson says, beaming victoriously, as Ahlstrom looks on, nodding.

    Pilot Height And Weight Requirements

    With that said, specific jobs in the Air Force have their own requirements.

    For example, all pilot candidates must meet the following:

    • Must be no less than 64 inches short, and 77 inches tall when standing.
    • Must be 34 40 inches tall when sitting.
    • Must weight no less than 160 lbs. and no more than 231 lbs.

    There are also specific height and weight requirements for specific air frames, which will be discussed at your pilot training.

    Additionally, there are other health and vision requirements that pilot candidates must meet.

    They include:

    • No history of hay fever, allergies, or asthma after the age of 12.
    • Normal color vision with near visual acuity of 20/30 without correction.
    • Distance visual acuity of no worse than 20/70 in each eye, correctable to 20/20.
    • Meet refraction, accommodation, and astigmatism requirements.

    How Can I Join the Army?

    Body fat percentage is estimated from a series of tape measurements around the neck and belly button. This estimate is not made routinely by MEPS officials, only to applicants who exceed the weight standards.

    The percentage of fat admitted varies with age and between branches of the Armed Forces. Importantly, there are no exemptions for exceeding the body fat percentage limits. That means that if your body fat percentage exceeds that number, you wont be recruited regardless of the rest of your test results.

    These are the body fat limits in each branch, for men and women :

    • Army: 24% and 30%,
    • Air Force: 20% and 28%,
    • Navy: 23% and 34%

    The army has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards obesity in its rank and file, after a sample survey of 767 soldiers last year found a third of them overweight.

    The findings put a question mark on the combat-readiness of the worlds third largest army with 1.3 million personnel, saddled with aggressive neighbours.

    A fight against flab has started in the army as a special order, effective from this May, says all personnel must undergo an annual obesity evaluation examination.

    The annual confidential reports of officers will henceforth carry a full-size picture, instead of the previous norm of a passport-size photo, so that any bulge around the waist is visible.

    Waist size will determine promotions. A certificate from the officer, who writes the ACR of the personnel to be promoted, will be sent to departments concerned.

    Promotion will be held back for anybody 10% above the ideal body weight, until he shaped up. If the promotion order comes before the certificate is issued, he will not be allowed to wear the next rank till the commanding officer certifies that he has reached the ideal weight.

    No overweight personnel can go abroad on assignments unless he is specially exempted or is a war wounded.
