Enlisting As A College Graduate Instead Of Joining As An Officer
While most college graduates think their best path forward to a career in the military is to join as an officer, some want a different experience. Officer training provides the most common path, but the military does permit graduates to enter as enlisted members. Though college graduates gain many valuable, transferable skills during their time in school, they do not learn the basic skills and knowledge related to joining the armed forces.
Topics such as military traditions, appearance, and the history of the branch you choose to serve in typically arent taught to officers, so someone wanting to work their way up may value this type of training. Others feel that, rather than immediately joining the ranks as a leader, they should experience training from bottom to top to gain the respect of those they command. When joining as an enlisted soldier, all new recruits go through the same paces and their commanding officers expect them to complete each and every step regardless of existing education.

Here are a few of the questions I have received recently about basic training. Even if you aren’t over 30, read the answers carefully. I always like to say every five minutes of reading you do on basic training before you leave will reduce your amount of push-ups by 5%. If you have any questions you would like me to address, please go to www.ultimatebasictraining.com and email me.
Question from Cheryl:
SGT Volkin, I am joining the military at 34 years old. I used to run a lot but after having a couple kids and taking a few years off of exercising, I am not sure I can keep up with the 18-23 age group anymore. What can I do?
Answer: Actually, basic training isn’t about competing with other recruits it’s about meeting military standards and exceeding your expectations. In my book, there is an eight-week fitness guide that walks you through, day by day, specific basic training workouts. Follow that guide, and you will far exceed any military standard.
Update: This letter writer emailed me back after she completed the workout described in my book. She claims she is doing one-arm push-ups now for the first time ever! She also reported she just ran her fastest two-mile run in her life after only eight weeks of training.
Question from Paul:
I am 40 years old and want to serve my country with the new military age limit, I now have my chance. Will the younger recruits be looking to me for guidance simply because of my age?

Reasons To Wait Until You Are Older
Marine Corps veterans such as Matt Young warn that military training from an early age may cause lasting effects on young mens psyches. Often young recruits choose the military through a lack of other options and dont fully understand the implications of their decision.
Other veterans such as Tom Marquell caution younger recruits to make sure theyre 110% committed to a military path as the military isnt the place to find oneself. Older recruits tend to have more self-knowledge and experience to make this decision.
Joining the military when you are older has advantages and disadvantages.

Requirements: Mental Physical And Character
Even if you fall in the right age range for the military career you want, there are other requirements you have to meet. Everyone who enters the military must have a high-school degree or GED and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test . Each branch has its own minimum passing score. The ASVAB consists of 10 subtests your scores on the different tests determine which specialties you qualify for.
Physical testing is another must. To join the Navy, for example, a 17- to 19-year-old man must perform 50 sit-ups in two minutes, do 42 pushups in two minutes, and make a 1.5 mile run in 12:30, the Navy says. Your passing requirements may be different, depending on your age and gender. Contagious diseases or health problems that limit your potential usefulness could be red flags that get you turned down.
Given you’ll be tasked with protecting the United States, the military also has some character requirements. Passing a background check is essential, BackgroundChecks.com says, particularly for positions that require handling classified material. A typical military background check involves fingerprinting, checking for past drug use and researching any criminal convictions in your past.

Benefits Of Joining The Military After College Graduation
Many reasons exist for joining the military after you possess a degree, and the benefits entice many individuals to prioritize their educations before taking the leap. The following section highlights a few worthwhile reasons a student might want to delay service to their country.
Whether planning to join theAir Force,Army,,Navy, orCoast Guard, each of these military branches allow students with four-year degrees to bypass general enlistment and move directly into officer training. In addition to saving time spent working up the ranks, officers take on leadership roles and earn higher salaries.
Under CLRP, qualified individuals who have not previously served in the military but hold existing student loans from attending college can apply for this repayment program when they join. While Congress stipulated a maximum amount of $65,000, branch set sits own maximums. The Army and Navy offer maximum repayment, the Marines allows $20,000 and the Air Force $10,000. The Coast Guard has a similar student loan repayment program for officers known as the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative .
Specifically designed for individuals in the military who either possess or are in the process of completing a health profession-related degree, this program repays up to $40,000 annually minus 25% taxes. To qualify, applicants must be in a Selected Reserve officer in the armed forces and plan to follow a career deemed critically needed during wartime by the Secretary of Defense.
How Can I Start A Career In The Armed Forces
Whatever your background or education, the chances are you’ll be able to find a job in the armed forces, as most training is done on the job. There are a few requirements though:
Youll need to get jogging, as you have to pass a fitness and routine medical test to join. If you have any health issues such as poor eyesight or asthma you should speak to your GP and also check with your recruiter if it rules out any jobs. You might boost your chances by joining a gym or sports team.
The earliest you can join up is at 16, but to train directly as an officer you must be 18 or over. If you are thinking about signing up before you turn 18 you will need to get permission from your parent or guardian.
You dont need GCSEs to join the Army as a soldier, the marines on general duties, or some jobs in the Navy and air force, such as gunners and engineering technicians. Because you are trained on the job there are still chances to move up the ranks too.
However, having 5 GCSES at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, will give you lots more options, like becoming a medical cadet in the Navy or moving up from soldier to officer if you are already in the Army.
All specialist or technical army jobs will ask for different grades but here are some examples:
Why Joining The Military At 25 Is Tricky
Before pumping the brakes and deciding to wait to join, you must remain strategic with your timing.
There are likely challenges ahead of you.
First, you will be older than many, if not all, of the other recruits.
Prepare yourself for some dad jokes.
When you are 25, you are potentially six to seven years older than those you serve with.
While the six to seven-year age gap may not seem like a lot, consider that many 25-year-old people are not hanging out with others who cannot legally get into a bar.
You might find yourself a bit annoyed.
On the other hand, you might relish being the voice of reason and a mentor for your fellow recruits.
We all need someone to look up to, and when you serve together, you become family.
The chances are that the experience will be somewhere between wtf are they thinking?! and its rewarding to have others look to me for advice and perspective.
Lastly, even though you are still within the prime of your life, you are closer to feeling the physical effects of aging earlier than those with whom you serve.
While this is not an impossible journey, it might make you feel old before you are actually old.
Also, it is vital to remember you are not competing with other recruits in boot camp.
Instead, your goal is to meet the military branchs standards and competing against yourself.
Another reason why joining the military at 25 is tricky is being away from family.
Those who are older often have their own family units.
Are You Eligible To Join The Military
Eligibility rules can be a little confusing. There are different rules for enlisting and for officer programs.
Enlisting: Enlisted members do the hands-on work of the military. They need at least a high school degree a GED may not suffice.
Officer: Officers are the managers of the military. Most officer programs require a college degree at minimum and are very competitive. Many officers have master’s or higher degrees.

Reasons To Join The Military When You Are Young
Joining the military young has its advantages. The military can give young recruits direction and discipline and prevent the potential pitfalls of leaving school without a planned course of action.
Rod Powers, author and a veteran of 23 years in the Air Force, points out that 40% of recruits drop out before their full term of service due mainly to realizing that the military life didnt suit them. Younger people are less inclined to know themselves and what they genuinely need, which puts them at a disadvantage when joining the military early.
