College Costs For Medical Professionals

Can You Go To College While in The Military? (United States Army)

Some of the best financial incentives to joining the military exist for healthcare professionals.

With 4-year medical school costs ranging from $150,000 to almost $400,000, it is no surprise that newly graduated medical professionals are looking for programs the help pay their medical school loans while providing rewarding and challenging experiences.

Final Thoughts On How The Military Pays For College

The military wants to incentivize people to enlist and one way to do that is by helping to pay for education. The variety of options available show that the U.S. government wants to assist its servicemen and women in paying off their student loans or having them forgiven or discharged whenever possible. Its a small, but significant, way to show gratitude for your service.

What To Watch Out For

When looking at programs to go back to school, trust your gut. If something smells fishy, it probably is. There are a lot of scams out there for students returning to school, some even aimed directly at veterans.

For-profit schools aggressively recruit veterans because they can make an easy dollar through the GI Bill. There are grant scams that give students fake checks to deposit and financial aid scams that offer to file your FAFSA for a fee and to help you find other aid. Beware of financial aid scams and stick close to the recommendations made by the VA when using your GI Bill funds.

This is just a sample of all the information that there is on financial aid for veterans. Check back with us in the near future as we post more in-depth articles exploring how veterans can use financial aid, successfully graduate with their degree, and where to find scholarships for veterans.

Making It Work Under Difficult Circumstances

Perseverance and dedication are key characteristics of successful students. Spittler says shes helped hundreds of students, and always loves to hear their stories. A few of them still stand out in her memory.

She recalls advising an online military student who was deployed overseas. He was interested in a masters program at National. She told him itd be a great program for him, but that he needed to take the classes in sequence, without breaks in between. She also told him his options in case he needed to drop a class.

Throughout the program, the student kept in touch with Spittler and, although she knew he was deployed, she didnt know where. Spittler says when a student is on active duty, You cant really discuss where theyre at because of security reasons. I really dont ask.

Wherever he was serving, the time difference was significant, and the student would stay up late in order to call Spittler during her office hours if he needed to speak to her. His ability to focus on difficult coursework while deployed really captured her attention and she praised him for his efforts.

Finally, he arrived at his capstone project, which is the last course in a National University program. Going into the last course, he had all As, but he was upset to receive a B+ in his final class.

She told him not to be so unhappy about the B+, but rather to be proud of what he had accomplished. It was no small thing to transition from one country to another and then to transition home.

Expanding Beyond Your Military Skills

Best military branch to join for COLLEGE

Many military members leave the service thinking that they will pursue a career thats closely tied to the jobs they performed while serving. For many, this is a good fit. Furlong doesnt think its the only path to fulfillment, however, and offers this advice to any servicemember looking to further their education with a degree:

One of the biggest surprises is that you can find jobs in every field. Its been a real eye-opener to see veterans in every program, every major. Dont be bound by your own limitations. Maybe you were a communications military member and worked with radio, and now youre thinking of going into IT . Dont feel that youre held to that. Understand you have an opportunity to really learn something new and try something new.

Having an open mind about what civilian careers you might enjoy, regardless of your military experience, is important to make sure you pick the right degree program for you.

If youre interested in something or you want to go down a certain employment path in a different area, go for it, Furlong says. Talk to someone. Get connected, and learn everything you can about that opportunity.

You dont have to wait to pursue your degree, either. Furlong shares that many students at Northeastern University are actively serving or serving in a guard or reserve role while attending full or part-time courses. Taking classes while in the military is actually a common pathway to a degree.

How To Choose A College Or University While In The Military

Members of the military who attend online universities can take part in classes anywhere and anytime however, not all programs are equal. Finding an online degree program built to help service members succeed is essential for active-duty personnel, especially those serving overseas.

Even if your intention is to advance your career in the military, then pursuing a degree may still be beneficial. Furthermore, if becoming an officer interests you, then youll likely need to earn a bachelors degree.1

Education After Military Service

After a service member decides to leave the military, there are a number of opportunities for them to further their education. One of the biggest pluses for veterans is the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which can cover up to 100% of college tuition expenses and up to $1,000 a month for rent. Veterans can use this program to get a college degree, vocational training or other certification. Current service members with between six and 16 years of service can also transfer this benefit to a spouse or child.

Veterans with at least two years of active-duty service can use the Montgomery GI Bill program to get up to $61,000 for college programs, flight training or apprenticeships.

Veterans and FRY Scholars who have or will soon exhaust their benefits and are currently enrolled in a STEM degree program or are seeking a teaching certification are eligible to receive the Rogers STEM scholarship. Family members who received transferred entitlement are not eligible for additional educational assistance under the STEM Scholarship.

Service members or their spouses can also reach out to Military OneSource education consultants while actively serving and for up to a year post-separation or retirement. These consultants can help service members and their family members figure out their education goals, find military-friendly colleges and professional programs, and apply for scholarships all at no cost.

Overseas Education For Spouses

YouthTruth

by MilitaryBenefits

Part of being a military spouse is regularly relocating to different duty stations. These assignments can take you and your family across the US and the globe. It is easy to focus all your energy on enrolling children in their new schools on base or off and supporting your spouse in their education pursuits. However, there are DoD-sponsored options for spouses as well. The following article outlines these options from certificate programs to graduate school opportunities.

When relocating abroad, most families will be there between two and four years. This is the typical assignment length for many overseas duty locations not considered to be forward deployed or an unaccompanied tour.

Two to four years is an ideal length of time to attend college classes, earn a degree, and advance your career. But what education opportunities are an option for military spouses living outside the Continental United States ?

The Department of Defense issues contracts to a select number of colleges and institutions. These schools will provide on-base classes, distance learning, or a combination of the two. This allows both military members and family members to study while assigned overseas.

Why Get A Degree When You Are Active Duty

Going for your degree as an active duty service member is a good idea.

Not only will you be taking advantage of the VA benefits you receive from joining the military but you can be working towards a successful future at the same time.

Is It Better To Finish College Before You Join The Military

Whether to join the military prior to finishing college depends on your goals and circumstances. If you’d like to become an officer, then you need to complete your degree prior to joining. If you need tuition assistance, then completing your degree over time as an enlisted member might be the right choice.

Become A Stronger More Effective Leader To Advance In Rank Or Move Into An Officer Position In The Military

If you intend to stay in the armed forces for the foreseeable future, earning a college degree can greatly benefit you in helping to open doors to advancement. To become a commissioned officer in most of the branches, active-duty military personnel are required to have a four-year college degree. This designation can help you increase your salary, job responsibilities, and future opportunities within your branch and upon entering the civilian workforce.

Getting A 4-Year Degree While Active Duty Military | Impossible?!

Some students complete their college degrees with no desire to leave government work. For example, a military student might major in business, information technology, cybersecurity, or another area with the intent of securing employment with a federal agency. Other military students may focus on one of the top civilian career paths for veterans. Here are a few examples of program majors and their related careers in which servicemembers and veterans might excel.

Furlong reminds students that earning a degree isnt reserved for those looking to exit the armed forces, either. The military might send a senior enlisted servicemember or officer to earn their graduate degree so they can in-turn access higher ranking positions. They might also use the education obtained to provide in-service training for their unit, he offers.

Conversely, a junior enlisted service member or officer might plan on ending their service and using their bachelors degree to help secure a job in government. In this case, there might be less focus on the actual program major, Furlong adds. For military personnel balancing service and civilian responsibilities, he recommends exploring online degree programs that offer increased flexibility.

Furlong says prospective students can bring clarity to their career goals by asking these questions:

Playing College Sports After The Military

Did you know that military veterans are still eligible to play college sports after they transition out of the military? The NCAA says that your eligibility to play is put on hold while you are serving your country, this means that when your service is over you can still play all 4 years at college. The NCAA also is not the only college sports organization with this rule, many other such as NJCAA, JUCO, and NAIA all allow veterans to play.

Coaches are also very eager to recruit athletes out of the military. These military athletes have life experience and leadership qualities that are unheard of in an average 18 year old freshmen. Not to mention, during 4 or 6 years in the military you have had more time to condition and get into much better shape than you were in when you enlisted. The fact that these athletes do not usually require financial aid because of the Post 9/11 GI Bill makes them even better recruits. However, coaches are often unsure of where to find these athletes to recruit them and people transitioning out of the military don’t know how to put themselves in front of these coaches to get the process started.
