Can I Go Into The Military With A Ged

Army Ged Plus Enlistment Program

Should I Enlist or Commission into the Military? You decide!

The Army used to run a special enlistment program designed for disadvantaged youths who had neither a high school diploma or a GED. This program, called the Army GED Plus Enlistment Program, had enabled applicants who didn’t possess a high school diploma or a GED to be sponsored by the Army to obtain a GED for enlistment purposes.

The GED Plus Enlistment Program was only available in certain areas with high concentrations of disadvantaged youths, and the number of enrollees was limited. Those enrolling needed to score 50 or higher on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery test, score 46 or higher on the Assessment of Individual Motivation test, be at least 18 years old, and be in good moral standing.

The Army enrolled GED candidates at two locations: at Fort Jackson in South Carolina for the regular Army, and at Camp Robinson in Arkansas for the Army National Guard. Those who passed the GED exam proceeded directly to enrollment.

However, the Army no longer needs this program, since it is enlisting fewer active-duty soldiers overall. The program closed in 2013.

    What Is The Asvab Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

    • General science
    • Surveillance and communications
    • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

What Is The Tier Classification System

The Department of Defense uses a three-tiered system to classify potential recruits. The criteria for each tier relates to educational requirements. The tiers are:

    • Tier 1: Recruits with at least a high school diploma
    • Tier 2: Recruits with a GED
    • Tier 3: Recruits without a high school diploma or GED

Tier 2 recruits may move to Tier 1. To do so, they must earn at least 15 hours of college credit. However, some military recruiters recommend attempting to enlist as a Tier 2 recruit or complete the ASVAB test before enrolling in college courses to move to Tier 1.

The Department of Defense uses this system to prioritize recruiting applicants with higher credentials and whom they deem more likely to satisfy their initial military obligation. Based on this, the Department of Defense requires at least 90% of all recruits overall to be from Tier 1. Each branch of the military has their own requirements for the percentage of Tier 2 recruits they enlist each year. Most branches do not admit Tier 3 recruits unless under certain circumstances or they make special exceptions.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

Join The Military As An Enlisted Member

Joining the Marine corps with a GED pt. 1

Enlisted members make up most of the military workforce. They receive training in a job specialty and do most of the hands-on work. Usually, youll sign up for four years of active duty and four years inactive. After youve completed your active duty time, you can either extend your contract or re-enlist if you want to continue serving.

Officers make up a much smaller part of the workforce. To join as an officer, you typically must have a four-year college degree and complete an officer program. You compete for promotion to continue your career. Most officers are managers who plan and direct operations. Others are professionals like doctors and lawyers. Officers get paid more than enlisted members and enjoy certain other benefits.

You dont have to join as an officer to become one though. You can join as an enlisted member and attend officer training later on.

That said, military recruiting involves something known as the Delayed Enlistment program where those who are not technically eligible to serve yet due to age or school status may enter into a provisional agreement with the service they wish to join.

Delayed Enlistment may put the enlistee into a program to familiarize them with military life, procedures, what to expect in basic training, etc. It can be a big help to those who want to serve, but are not yet eligible to become full-fledged military recruits.

    Condition #7 Mental Illness

The military takes mental health pretty seriously. Though it is difficult to cover every single mental illness in detail, for the most part, if there has been an official diagnosis and treatment for a mental illness, joining the U.S. Military may be a challenge.

It can also present a challenge for current members that are diagnosed with certain mood disorders or behavioral problems after getting enlisted.

Along with depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders suicidal thoughts and self-harm are critical factors that are gauged.

Naturally, the U.S. Military is pretty reluctant to accept anyone with a history of self-harm or suicidal thoughts, regardless of how long ago they occurred.

Physicians are allowed to exercise some discretion during an examination if they believe previous circumstances, especially one time situations, may be truly in the past and would not impede on their performance in the military moving forward.

Other mental health concerns that may affect military service include:

    • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
    • Personality disorders: These include things like Paranoid Schizophrenia, Borderline personality disorder, Antisocial personality disorder, and Dependent personality disorder.
    • Eating disorders: Including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge eating, Pica, and Rumination disorder.
    • Dementia

As stated above, having scored high on the GED test is great but not a requirement to get enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. You must take the ASVAB test and generally, applicants that have scored high on the GED test will also do well on the ASVAB battery.

If you want to qualify for service in the U.S. Marine Corps, passing the well-respected and heavily researched Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery aptitude test is required with a score thats at least 50.

Each year, the ASVAB exam is taken by a large number of high school and college students looking to secure a job in the U.S. military services. So keep in mind that to qualify for the U.S. Marines or one of the other departments of the armed forces, a GED diploma is not considered equal to a grade 12.

The ASVAB is not an IQ test but measures skills and aptitude in 10 areas to help the Army determine your aptitude for specific tasks. The test is also used for Air Force recruits and to learn if you can join the U.S. Air Force with a GED, check out this article.

The short answer is yes. You can join the Army with a GED. Is it as easy to join the Army with a GED as it is with a high school diploma? No, it is much more difficult to join the Army with a GED compared to a high school diploma.

As of 2015, when you apply to join the Army, your education qualifications will determine what Tier you are in. The three Tiers are:

High school diploma producing programs Alternate high school credentials Less than a high school diploma

Applicants with a high school diploma fall into the Tier 1 category as long as they are in the 31st percentile or above on their AFQT . Applicants with a GED automatically fall into the Tier 2 category and must score in the 50th percentile or above on the AFQT to qualify.
