Military Careers: Can You Join With A Criminal Record

Ukrainian president calls for âanyone who can join the Ukrainian armyâ? to take up arms

by AllCleared | Aug 3, 2017

Can you join the military with a criminal record? We get this question a lot, especially if one has a misdemeanor. Will this create an issue with being accepted into the Canadian Armed Forces ? If you want to join the Canadian Army and serve your country, but your past life holds a criminal record, you will need to obtain a Record Suspension, formerly known as a Canadian Pardon. The Regular Force is made up of the Air Force, Army, and Navy. These branches of the Canadian Armed Forces have a unique set of moral character requirements and all must comply with federal law as it relates to recruits with criminal records.

The Canadian Armed Forces recruits for various positions in the Regular and Reserve Forces. Both forces are made up of commissioned officers and non-commissioned members . NCMs are usually skilled personnel who provide operational support to commissioned officers.

To join the Regular Force in a full-time capacity you must meet some basic and specific criteria. Basic requirements to join as a NCM include:

  • being a Canadian citizen
  • being between 17 and 57 years old
  • having completed at least Grade 10

You may also join the Reserve Force in different capacities of training and availability. You need to be at least 16 years old to meet basic eligibility for the Reserve Force. Specific requirements will depend on specific posting.

To Get Physically Fit

Physical stamina and health goals are another reason some people join the service. Working in the military requires you to go through intense physical training. Some people see this as an excellent opportunity to form healthier habits, lose weight or build muscle.

If You Dont Like Exercise

It should go without saying that the military is going to demand that you run, push, pull, sit-up, and climb on a regular basis.

While some jobs demand more than others, every soldier, , Seaman and Airman is expected to pass physical fitness tests.

You dont need to be a stud to succeed in the military, but if you really hated P.E. in high school, I dont suggest joining up.

Encouraging Words For Someone Joining The Military Training

The recruiter will probably emphasize the high-tech, state-of-the-art, sophisticated equipment that you will get to work with. True, some soldiers are trained for the highly skilled jobs. Generally, however, those jobs go to the soldier who was already trained, educated, and technically skilled before joining the military. Many of the high-skill jobs will go to soldiers who already have at least two years of college. And often the high-tech work is done by civilian contractors who have the necessary training and skills.

In reality, few military assignments could be described as high-tech, although many of the jobs sound high-tech. For instance, one U.S. Army brochure includes assignments with titles such as, combat engineering, general engineering, supply and service, and food service. These assignments, and others offered by the military, would likely offer little more than low skill, manual labor. The armed forces simply do not have the time, the need, or the resources to train many recruits for highly skilled work.

Applying For A Record Suspension As A Former Or Current Member Of The Caf

What if I was or currently serving in the CAF with a criminal record? What is the process? This is another question we get a lot when determining a persons eligibility for a record suspension.

If you were once in the military or you are still currently a member of the force, a military conduct sheet must be submitted as a part of the Record Suspension Application. You can obtain your Military Conduct Sheet by contacting the Department of National Defence Access to Information and Privacy Section under the Privacy Act. If you are a present member of the Regular or Reserve Forces, you must request a certified, signed and dated copy of your Military Conduct Sheet from your Commanding Officer.

Depending on when you left the military is what determines where you obtain your military conduct sheet.

Left three years ago or less Commanding Officer of the last posting or unit.

Left five years ago or less The DMCARM.

Left more than five years ago The Personnel Records Unit at the National Archives of Canada.

The following information should be included in your military conduct sheet application:

  • The reason for requesting the conduct sheet must be included as for the purposes of a record suspension application
  • The individuals first and last name
  • Date of birth

Learn Structure And Discipline

No matter what your specialty in the military is, your time in the service will instill in you a strong work ethic.

The military does not believe in quitting, and laziness on the job is never tolerated. It can be hard at times, but always worth it.

When you get out of the military, employers will see someone who works hard and can be trusted to get the job done.

How Does An American Join The Ukrainian Army

Ukraines Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that foreigners who want to defend Ukraine and world order should join the Territorial Defense of Ukraine by contacting Ukraines foreign diplomatic missions in their respective countries.

Together we defeated Hitler, and we will defeat Putin, too, Kuleba wrote.

Foreigners willing to defend Ukraine and world order as part of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries. Together we defeated Hitler, and we will defeat Putin, too.

Dmytro Kuleba

The Territorial Defense in Ukraine is seeking only those with combat or law enforcement experience to fight, according to Military Times, and people who want to join should be prepared with their government-issued ID, passport and documents proving military or law enforcement service. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gear, and travel to Ukraine is arranged with assistance from Ukrainian embassies, consulates and the Territorial Defense in Ukraine.

The security situation throughout Ukraine is highly volatile, and conditions may deteriorate without warning, the advisory reads.

How To Join The Military With A Felony

Should I have ever joined the Air Force?

Nothing is more patriotic and selfless than wanting to serve your country after you serve your sentence. The army certainly recognizes this. As a result, they screen applicants from day one to determine which convicts truly learned their mistakes. If you are honest about your past and can demonstrate your improvement, the military may grant you a waiver. Keep in mind, however, that several offenses and situations may automatically disqualify an applicant. Moreover, the army plays by its own rules. In other words, they will still ask about expunged records and pardons, even though other employers dont do so. Similarly, the armed forces follow a set of guidelines that are separate from state and local laws.

To summarize and answer our initial question: yes, you certainly can join the military with a felony. The task is definitely demanding. However, if you successfully finished your prison sentence and think that you have what it takes to become an army member, then the application process shouldnt be that daunting. After all, thats what the recruiters are looking for.

Can You Still Join The Canadian Armed Forces With A Criminal Record

An applicant to the Canadian Armed Forces must be of good moral standing and have no outstanding obligation under the judicial system. Although a criminal record may not automatically disqualify you from service, it lowers your overall suitability.

A Canadian criminal record does not necessarily preclude you from joining the Canadian military. If you do have a record that has not been pardoned, such as a DUI, it could be considered on a case by case basis.

However, serious crimes would likely prevent you from being accepted. You should also make sure that you have finished your sentence, including fines and probation before you apply.

If you do get into the military with a criminal record, you should apply for a Record Suspension as soon as you are eligible so that you can be considered for promotions in the future.

It is also important to note that a record suspension will not only help you get accepted into the CAF by meeting the requirement but, if in the future you are called before the CAF disciplinary board, your existing criminal record may affect your current standing. In Canada prosecutions before disciplinary boards for disciplinary offences such as conduct prejudicial to the profession do not create a criminal record. The same act and previous ones, however, may give rise to a criminal prosecution before civilian criminal courts where, upon conviction, the accused will inherit a criminal record. Therefore, obtaining a record suspension is encouraged.

Military Retirement Benefits Are Worth Millions

Its not an exaggeration to say military retirement benefits are worth millions of dollars.

Military members receive a lifetime pension based on the average of their highest three years of base pay. Military retirees who are in the High 3 Retirement System receive 2.5% of their base pay for each year of service. So 20 years of service would equate to a pension worth 50% of their highest 3 years of base pay .

Members who are participating in the new Blended Retirement System use the same calculations, except that you would use a 2.0% multiplier instead of 2.5%. So a retirement at 20 years would be 40%, 25 years would be 50%, and 30 years would be 60%. However, there are two big additions: the first is matching TSP contributions of up to 5% of your base pay, allowing you to have portable retirement benefits when you leave the military, even if you dont reach retirement. The other is a Continuation Pay Bonus, which is a mid-career cash bonus for extending your service commitment.

Example retirement value:

Enlisted members earn somewhat less than commissioned officers. However, their pensions are based on the same formula and receive the same cost of living increases each year. So you can easily run the numbers and get a rough approximation of potential retirement benefits. For example, a $2,500 a month pension is worth $30,000 per year. That would be worth $300,000, $600,000, or $900,000 over 10, 20, or 30 years.

Do Americans Believe Us Adults Should Be Allowed To Fight In The Ukrainian Army

Fifty percent of U.S. adults believe American citizens should be allowed to volunteer to fight in the Ukrainian army, according to a YouGov poll, while 26% say theyre not sure, and 24% say they shouldnt. The poll also found 18% believe American citizens shouldnt be allowed to voluntarily enlist in foreign armies under any circumstances.

While Americans are split on whether U.S. adults fighting for Ukraine should be allowed, most dont think it will make a difference, unless they have a military background. A 43% plurality of U.S. adults believe American volunteers enlisting would help Ukraines resistance, according to the poll, while among those whove served in the military, 57% believe it would make a difference.

The poll, of 5,898 U.S. adults, was conducted March 10-11.

Heres Why Most Americans Cant Join The Military

What could disqualify you from joining Army or even the military

The military has embraced openly-gay members within its ranks, and now squabbles over combat roles for women and whether to accept transgender troops, but the future may require the Pentagon to accept whomever it can get.

At the height of the Iraq War, it seemed like the standard for service was so low, even convicted felons could get into the Army and Marine Corps.

But today, more than two-thirds of Americas young people wouldnt qualify for military service because of physical, behavioral, or educational problems.

The services have long required at least a high-school education as a prerequisite for joining.

The Army used to offer GED assistance for recruits who wanted to join. These days, having a felony conviction is out of the question, but so are some tattoos, gauged earlobes, and taking hyperactivity medication. The Pentagon says 71 percent of Americas 34 million 17-24 year old population would fail to qualify for enlistment.

Of those eligible for service, the Army estimates only one percent even have an interest.

The U.S. Armys major enlistment requirements include:

  • Ages between 17 and 34 years old
  • Must be U.S. citizen or legal foreign national
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 33 score on Armed Forces Qualification Test
  • No tattoos on fingers, neck or face
  • No ear gauges
  • No persistent illegal drug use
  • No insulin-dependent diabetes
  • Meet height & weight requirements

S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the six active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

What About My Hair And Beard

Grooming standards in the Navy exist to promote neatness, cleanliness and safety.

Men are expected to keep their hair short and neat.

A religious accommodation request can be submitted for personnel to wear a beard.

There is no requirement for women to cut their hair short. Short hair is permitted to be worn down if it falls above the collarbone. Long hair is expected to be pulled back in a bun, ponytail, braids or corn rows.
