good idea. We need to talk

Is there any way to join NFCU without –

1. Never been in the military

2. No family members in the military

3. No in laws in the military

4. My wife is not in the military

Thank you all in advance.

There are no loopholes for NFCU. They exist for military and family. Without the qualifications you won’t be able to join.

There are some CUs out there that are open to anyone but NFCU is pretty strict about having to meet the actual requirements, which makes sense since they are intended for military and family only.

Who Is Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union has some old roots. They were established way back in 1933 as the Navy Department Employees Credit Union of the District of Columbia .

They were created as a credit union for Navy Employees who were members of the Federal Employees Union. A year later, in 1943, President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act, which became the foundation for credit unions.

In 1947, Navy Department Employees Credit Union of the District of Columbia was dissolved and reestablished as an official federal credit union, which they named Navy Department Employees Federal Credit Union. At this point, they also opened up membership to all Navy employees and personnel in the Washington area.

In 1954, 21 years after their establishment, they officially became Navy Federal Credit Union. At this point, they opened their memberships to enlisted personnel. Through the years, they have continued to change and evolve. They have continued to grow and improve their products and services. They have become one of the largest and most influential credit unions on the market.

Today, they have over 7 million members across the country, and they have over $78 billion in assets.

    Nfcu Loans And Credit Cards

    • Home Equity Loans
    • Motorcycle, Boat & Leisure Vehicles

Navy Federal credit card options are typical of what you might expect from any credit card program rewards, cash back options, and variable APRs. What makes these cards different than some commercial cards?

No annual fees. There are three levels of credit card service with the lowest interest rates reserved for those who qualify for the NFCU Platinum card.

Auto loans are offered for both new and used vehicles, and there is also a refinance option. What some military members may be interested in here? Motorcycle, boat, and leisure vehicle loans.

Why are these NFCU loans particularly helpful? Because some military members and veterans find out the hard way that VA mortgage loans are not available for houseboats, Recreation Vehicles , campers, and other vehicles that can technically act as a dwelling but have no permanent foundation.

A VA loan cannot be used to buy a house boat or RV because they cannot be classified or taxed as real estate. Thats where the NFCU Motorcycle, Boat & Leisure Vehicles loan comes in.

And while were discussing VA mortgages, Navy Federal offers them in addition to some other home loan programs with similar features in some case . Home loan options include:

Home loans arent the only lending choices you have. Navy Federal offers student loans with the following basic terms:

Although both geared toward military members and their families, Navy Federal and USAA differ a little in their eligibility requirements. This is mostly noted in Navy Federals inclusion of Department of Defense civilians, which USAA does not cover. Including DoD employees opens up some great banking opportunities for those who are not quite servicemembers.

Both institutions offer their customers great access with 24/7 customer service and online and mobile banking features, too. Both institutions are pretty limited in their U.S. branch locations, however. Navy Federal does provide a wider physical reach than USAA, especially overseas.

When it comes to each banks account offerings, both offer a great variety of accounts, including basic savings and checking accounts. NFCU stands out for its five education savings accounts options. This means you can open five kinds of Navy Federal accounts as ESAs to save for education expenses. Similarly, USAA offers a 529 College Savings Plan which you can use to save and pay for education expenses, as well. If youre looking for a money market account, though, you can only find that with Navy Federal.

How To Join Navy Federal Credit Union

This article explains How To Join Navy Federal Credit Union.

Not only does Navy Federal offer great financial services, but we also help a lot of people who arent in the Navy. All branches of the military, the Department of Defense, veterans, and their families are qualified members. We are very happy that we have been able to help the soldiers and their families for more than 80 years now. Join or share your membership with a family member. Find out how you can join or do this.

Once A Member Always A Member

Navy Fed members who have already joined using this backdoor should not be concerned about losing their membership. One fundamental principle of credit unions is that once a member, always a member. The qualification to join doesnt have to be maintained to continue to be a member of the credit union. You just have to maintain the minimum balance in the share savings account to keep the membership active. This principle is stated in the Federal Credit Union Act:

1759 e Retention of membership.Except as provided in section 1764 of this title, once a person becomes a member of a credit union in accordance with this subchapter, that person or organization may remain a member of that credit union until the person or organization chooses to withdraw from the membership of the credit union

It should also be noted that the Navy League backdoor used to be a legitimate method of gaining Navy Fed membership. The backdoor rules were disclosed by Navy Fed representatives. Thus, everyone who had joined by following these rules should feel that theyre legitimate members.

Another Backdoor But It Doesnt Allow Everyone In

If youre not yet a Navy Fed member, you may still be able to join even though youre not in the military. In February, Navy Fed announced an expansion of its field of membership to include veterans and their families. If you have an immediate family member who has ever been in the military, you are eligible to join. Immediate family members include grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, grandchildren, and children. Veterans and their family members can join via all channels however, if your veteran family member is not already a Navy Federal member, you have to apply by phone or at a branch. It cant be done online.

I have more details in this February blog post.

History Of Navy Feds Membership Rules

    Airforce Federal Credit Union Locations

This backdoor may be related to Navy Feds acquisition of USA Federal Credit Union in 2010. USA Federal Credit Union was headquartered in San Diego, and before the acquisition, USA Fed was well known as an easy-to-join credit union. However, the Navy League wasnt the well-known association to join for USA Fed membership. It was the Prime Meridian Association, and Navy Fed did not add this association into its field of membership

Ive monitored Navy Feds website closely since I began writing about the credit union in 2006. The eligibility section of Navy Feds website has always limited membership to those who have military affiliation. The last big change to eligibility was in 2008 when membership expanded to include all branches of the Armed Forces.

As the largest credit union in the nation, Navy Fed probably doesnt see the need to aggressively pursue new members. Theres little to gain with promoting a backdoor to membership, and theres a lot of potential bad publicity if the backdoor makes news.
