Chase Military Lending Act

3 Important Facts for spouses of Active Duty Military Service Members applying for a Green Card

Chase updated their military policy on September 20, 2017 to comply with the Military Lending Act. Any account opened AFTER Sep 20, 2017 is eligible for the Chase military fee waiver.

You can check your MLA status in the MLA database.

I recently opened a Chase IHG Premier card and received my MLA fee waiver letter from Chase before I even received the card. When my wife opened up her Sapphire Reserve card, she also received the Chase MLA letter the same day she got her cards.

Here’s a scan copied the MLA letter I received. You can click on the image to see a PDF copy:

The text of the letter says:

Do I Have To Be On Active Duty To Have The Card

Not necessarily. Though active duty members are the primary recipients the ECP does consider veterans and reservists.

The primary method of determining eligibility is any service member past or present with current Exchange shopping privileges. The next determining factor is the credit score of the individual applying.

If accepted, service members may add additional users. It is common for individuals to include spouses as well as dependents .

Once another eligible individual receives permission he or she can use the card to make full purchases. They also have the ability to pay monthly installments if necessary.

Funeral And Burial Benefits

The DOD will care for, transport and inter your loved one.

  • The surviving spouse, children and siblings of the service member, as well as the parents of both the service member and surviving spouse, are authorized to receive travel entitlements.
  • If the spouse, children or parents choose not to travel to the funeral, the person authorized to direct the disposition of the service members remains and two close relatives may use this benefit.
  • Travel entitlement includes round-trip transportation and two days per diem upon arrival at the interment site.

Veteran Health Identification Cards

The VA also issues veteran health identification cards for veterans who are in the VA medical system.

Many veterans believe they need to be receiving service-connected disability benefits in order to be eligible for VA health care benefits. This is not the case. All veterans are potentially eligible, based on different criteria, including when and where they served, whether or not they have a service-connected health condition, if they were discharged for medical reasons, served in a war zone, recently returned from an overseas deployment, or other conditions. Each situation is unique and each veteran should contact the VA to determine their eligibility status.

, veterans with a VA Health Identification Card are eligible to access military installations to use the Base Exchange, Commissary, and certain MWR activities.

Cons Of Having A Military Star Card

No matter how well it is advertised every credit card has some drawbacks. Letâs take a look at some of the cons:

  • Approval for the card is not automatic, even if enlisted in the military. Eligibility is based on credit score.
  • No cash redemption offered for reward points.
  • The rewards points that are accumulated are not available at all retailers or services.
  • Not every purchase qualifies for reward points.

It is worth noting that with any credit card there is a risk of borrowing money you do not currently have in your account. High credit card debt and late payments affect your credit score negatively. It can impact how or if you receive a loan in the future.

So good judgement and responsibility is highly advised. Try to set a calendar reminder each month a few days before the payment is due to make sure you have the necessary funds and pay on time. You also may be able to setup automatic monthly payments.

Veterans Id Card Information

Should You Get The Military Star Card?

One of the most common questions we receive comes from veterans who are looking to get a veteran ID card that proves their military service.

There are many reasons why proof of military service can come in handy including securing veterans benefits, proof of service for military discounts, or for personal records.

Thankfully, the VA offers two types of veterans ID cards, one for members with a service-connected disability rating, and a general veterans ID card for those who do not have a disability rating. The U.S. government created the Veterans Identification Card Act 2015 which authorizes the VA to issue veteran ID cards to all veterans with an honorable discharge. The VA began issuing these cards in November 2017.

Update For Sbp School Certification

The certification process has gotten easier for students age 18 and older covered as a child annuitant under the military Survivor Benefit Plan.

The changes went into effect in May 2020, highlighted by the following:

  • A simpler certification form
  • A students ability to self-certify
  • An extension of the certification deadline to annually instead of each term/semester

SBP annuity payments for qualifying high school and college students are not affected by school closures in the wake of coronavirus disease 2019.

The DOD simplified the process of students becoming certified in other ways, including:

  • Students will now self-certify. So they will no longer need a school officials signature or school documentation when they certify full-time attendance. With COVID-19 school closures, this truly simplifies the process.

Military Spouse Id Cards: Everything You Need To Know

Whether youre just marrying into the military or keeping all of your military life ducks in a row, theres one thing you need to keep an eye on regularly: your military spouse ID card.

As the spouse of a service member, you are entitled to a dependent ID card. It’s almost a rite of passage. After getting your marriage license and moving to your first installation — or driving hours to an installation while your spouse is at basic training — you receive your first magical, ID card.

No matter how hard you try to look good, the photo will still turn out terrible. You’ll sign your name and off you go, able to get on base by yourself, access your health care benefits, shop at the commissary and use the gym.

As with all things military-related, the process for getting a military ID card is specific and sometimes sensitive. You’ll frequently see that the worldwide ID Card server is down. But you’ll get the hang of it quickly and realize that it’s not even close to the most complicated thing you’ll do as a military spouse.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions surrounding the military spouse ID card process.

How You Can Get A Different Id Card To Prove Military Service

Unfortunately, a DD Form 214 isnt a photo ID, it is simply a document. Thankfully there are many other ways to prove your military service.

If you are looking for a photo ID or other wallet-sized ID to prove your military service, then these may be good options for you:

State Drivers License or ID Card.

State or County Veterans ID Card program.

  • Some counties or other communities issue veteran ID cards. These arent official US or state government IDs, but they may be valuable in the local community, as many restaurants and retailers will extend discounts as a thanks for your service. These cards may also be good for local or county benefits programs, but these vary by locale.

Veterans Service Organization Membership Card.

  • Many veterans service organizations such as the DAV, VFW, American Legion, and other organizations have membership cards. Check with your local military organization for eligibility requirements.

Do you know of any other forms of ID that can be used to prove military service? If so, please contact us. We will add it to the list.

Military Credit Card Fee Waivers And Other Perks From Chase

DACA, Military Spouse & Parole-In-Place (PIP) and Applying for Green Card from within the U.S.

The Chase official site has a page dedicated to helping those who want to claim their SCRA benefits on credit cards issued by Chase.

The federal law known as the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act was created to help service members avoid credit-related fees. For example, SCRA rules state there is a mandatory 6% interest rate cap on loans and credit you had prior to starting military service-but this cap is not automatic and must be applied for in writing with supporting documentation such as military orders, etc.

Some credit card companies, including Chase, have chosen to liberally interpret SCRA laws and offer annual fee exemptions on their cards including the most elite credit cards offered to financially qualified military members.

That is why Chase waives the whopping $550 annual fee for its Sapphire Reserve Card for active duty military members. But that isnt the sum total benefits you may receive from Chase for registering as an active duty military member and claiming your SCRA benefits with them.

The Chase official site reminds service members that protections under SCRA include:

  • Reduction of Interest Rates above the SCRA limits
  • Protection from certain foreclosure activity
  • Protection from vehicle repossession
  • Early cancellation of vehicle leases where required
